Preston is seeking a lottery grant to fund a £4m 24 mile cycle/walkway around the city as a legacy to the 2012 Preston Guild Wheel. The Guild Wheel is awared every 20 years to commemorate and celebrate the town's Guild Charter presented to the town in 1179 by King Henry II. Preston now has city status and the Guild now means more to it apparently now than previously.
Scheme supported by Nicola Cooke, Chris Boardman, and Sir Tom Finney (football legend) and British cyclings president Brian Cookson who is apparently a local Lancashire lad.
This route will consit of new and existing paths .. linking the town to the countryside and
providing safe routes to schools It is intended that this path will link to National Cycle Network routes - following the river from Avenham Park to the docks and the Ribble Link - joining the cycle routes and paths to Broughton and up to the Forest of Bowland where Chris Boardman recalls many a pleasant training session. (I agree - that area is just pure
bliss
Preston hopes its project will promote more cycling for work and pleasure in its region and encourage more tourism to the North West.
I hope they get their funding .. that sounds like it will be a really pleasant feature for the city.
