I ma new to cycling - having taken it up follwoing an accident. I joined the local wheelers and have enjoyed riding ever since.

However, I am amazed at teh number of near misses, abuse and injuries dished out by drivers in this area who show such hatred to cyclists.

We live in Wales. We are surreounded by open roads so space is not exactly at a premium. But there is never a ride which goes by without some sort of incident.

Last week a member was hit on the backside by a motorist .. and had previously been cut up by a speeding motorist who nearly crashed his car - despite having a child with him. and on Tuesday - another of our club was hit by a passenger in a Transit van who used a heavy duty chain to whip him. - causing a nasty injury and his crash from the bike. Caugh across the head .. we would be investigating a murder.

As a serving police officer I have really had my eyes well and truly opened to the way cyclists are being abused by drivers. What is the matter with these people? Cyclists have as much right to be on the road as the next person. Do these people think we do not own cars and pay taxes too?

I beg every cyclist to stop taking this abuse. Record the details and report them to the police. Hit them where it hurts .. in fines and points on licences

Hmmm. I have always urged anyone facing any kind of road rage on the roads out there to report it. If we have more than one witness statement - we then have some evidence to prosecute - but we still have to be able to prove beyond doubts. So just because we appear "not to be doing anything :roll" does not mean that nothing is being done. It goes on file and should we get some other report .. we can then take things a little or lot further.

The Transit van incident is particulary worrying. If there is a CCTV cam - then report and the police then can requisition the footage as evidence of a serious assault. In fact .. always check if there is a CCTV in case it did record the incident  I cannot say fairer than that as we do want to put a stop to such viciously raging bullies.

The other problem of course? This chap lives in Wales... Perhaps less Arrive Deprived but Alive and a little more policemen on stealth patrols putting fear of God and Dick  up the backsides of these amoeba-brained twits migh just be the ticket we want to give them

THAT would put the fear of God into ME!

I'd share another amusement here, but the Ulverston PC concerned might be a lurker here - I keep telling him to visit! (sorry Mick!)

Given my own plentiful experience on a bike, including regular club runs, I have difficulty believing that rider suffers so much abuse for no apparent reason.

The only 'abuse' I had was being sprayed (not squirted) from a water gun by a passenger on a passing truck, but it was after spending hours in noon summer sunshine so it was actually a welcome relief :) I saw others ahead get the same so I’m sure it was just good humoured fun.
