From the Daily Express, 28th December 2004:

1 in 7 at 100+mph? Since 1/7th is approx 15%, that makes the 85th percentile speed 100mph. And I reckon I've seen it flowing faster than that...

As the M6Toll is currently struggling, with traffic volumes falling steadily in the September-November period, perhaps the operators should petition the government to allow a higher speed limit as an experiment, which might give people an added incentive to use it.

Doesn't seem to put them off at the moment, though :D

If you are going to pay £3 to drive you may as well get value for money... 8-)

What are the KSIs anyway....is it a problem or does it prove that 80+ can be a safe speed?

BTW I see we are getting M25 style cameras on the new M42 section....one step forward two steps back...

Apparently numerous drivers have died of boredom since the road opened :|

The official average daily traffic figures are:

August: 55,362
September: 52,041
October: 50,242
November: 47,047

See: http://www.m6toll.co.uk/newsdetail.asp?id=25

So it sounds as though they could do with a boost

I have been told that goods vehicles largely avoid the toll road. The article suggests only cars were monitored but could the absence of slower moving traffic may be one reason for car drivers allowing themselves to travel a little faster?

LGVs get stung £6 a time (it was £10 to start with). This "persuades" them to use the free alternative. I presume they've worked out the economics, and that they're not "saving" £6 in fuel by using the toll road. Therein lies the difference between this, and the Severn Bridges, where the alternative route between Bristol and S Wales is a long diversion via Gloucester!

That certainly seems to be the case.

Well, thats not too bad.....

Aaargghhh. Not Gloucester

As an aside, having driven on the M6 Toll quite few times now, what I've witnessed lends a lie to some of the excuses proffered by the Middle Lane Owners Club, i.e.

Lane 1 is so rutted - Not on the M6 Toll it isn't. HGVs hardly use it and its virtually brand new.
I'd never get back out into lane 2 - Not a problem on the M6 Toll, the dearth of traffic makes lane changing a cinch in complete safety.

And yet....people still seem to drive the full length of the thing in L2 or 3 with nary a thought for poor old L1.

If you think that going flat out in a straight line is a decent alternative to a track day it shows what kind of biker you are. Where do you do your track days - Santa Pod?

That's quite funny. :)

Welcome. I know you're here from C+.

"racing" at Santa Pod - very skillful - not. And yes, I've done a few 'run what ya brung's (best time 12.6 ss qtr in my 440ci Challenger) - about as much skill as flooring it and changing gear at the right time. (unless you are running a Top Fueler or Funny car)

Another wannabe...

Come back when you are in the low 9s, then I may give you credit for having some skill. Until then don't pretend you know what you are talking about.

now run along and play with the other trolls ... :D

So, what are the accident statistics for the M6 Toll? It would be very interesting to see whether all these speeding drivers are having more or less accidents than those on normal motorways.

I'm intrigued as to the 'racing' mentioned by the article. It's in the big text and the opening paragraph, but the article then goes on to say nothing about racing. Obviously racing on public roads is a lot more dangerous than just exceeding speed limits - so what do they mean: are people driving faster, or are people racing?

And using the term 'boy racer' for people who travel 'well over the 70mph speed limit' is a bit close-minded, no? What constitutes 'well over'?

I think it's just journalese for "driving very quickly" - I doubt whether there's any implication that actual "racing on the public highway" is taking place on a regular basis.

Similarly, journalists often refer to "speeding traffic" without specifically implying that it is travelling above the posted speed limit.
