found this on another forum:

Quote:
I have the elec folding mirrors, and there is a very narrow and steep hill i go up on a daily basis, have seen numerous mirrors smashed off here, so always fold mine when going up or down.
The problem is you can only fold them at less than 20mph, consequenlty i often have to slow right down, when there is traffic behind it must be annoying for them and certainly is for me!

Was wondering any way of folding them up above 20mph??

Who says current policy isn't dumbing down drivers?

If the road is so narrow that you run the risk of knocking off mirrors then why the !£%*! would you be trying to drive it at over 20mph anyway???

As a rather pedantic related point, do you commit an offence if you drive (at any speed) with your mandatory drivers side mirror retracted?

I wonder if he also bemoans the fact that his front parking sensors don't work above 10 MPH so he can't tell if he's tailgating?!

I follow one particularly cretinous driver on the way to work quite a lot who ALWAYS has his mirrors folded....

'.......mandatory drivers side mirror retracted?'

When did exterior mirrors become compulsory on cars? :?

Drivers side about 1980 I think.

Passenger side mandatory if no interior mirror can be fitted (eg solid panelled van).

IIRC passenger side mirrors compulsory on cars built after early/mid 90's.

Driving without due care?

Driving without due consideration for other road users too.

Mind you it would rely on you being observed by a policeman - not a certainty here as you know!

No, you just have to make sure you are going so fast that there is no-one behind you.

(It's a bit like if your brakes fail, drive home as fast as possible before you have an accident..)

Oops! Missed that bit!

No interior mirror required now, then? Just as long as there are two outside ones.

I wonder how many more accidents there would be if everyone removed their interior mirror?

I would suppose that driving without mirrors would be classed as a vehicle defect, 3 points per offence, so 6 for two mirrors folded.

I'm pretty sure you can get a ban for 4 bald tyres (4*3=12)

Like to think that someone stupid enough to drive with 4 bald would get a ban, but know someone (and seen licence etc) who was pleasantly surprised to get 3 points ( + higher fine ) for 2 bald - saw reasoning somewhere on net ,but can't find it - it's similar to arguement about being caught speeding in same section of road.

This might be "urban myth" - though if so it's a pretty old one - but I was always led to believe that points, like prison sentences, could run concurrently.

Last time this came up someone found the magistrate's guidelines and it's clear as crystal: Three points total for any number of bald tyres.

The 'three points per tyre' myth seems to be perpetuated by the tyre industry. Can't think why...
