North Wales chief constable Richard Brunstrom is considering a blanket 40mph speed limit throughout Snowdonia National Park, he says in his online blog.

Richard Brunstrom blames the ‘all-pervading and incessant high-pitched whine of the motorbikes’ for ‘substantially spoiling the ambient grandeur’ and says a blanket new lower limit may fix the problem.

The blog entry says: ‘Perhaps a 40mph speed limit throughout the entire Park would resolve the engine noise issue - and a general slowing down of all traffic might be a further end in itself… I’m going to consider this some more.’

Brunstrom also says bike engine noise is ‘Quite remarkably intrusive’ and ‘enough to really irritate.’

Richard Brunstrom has a history of using his blog to attack motorcyclists. Last year he said: ‘Anyone who ventures onto the roads of the UK will be aware of the quite dreadful driving exhibited by so many motorcyclists.’

He is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for using images of a decapitated motorcyclist to launch a road safety campaign without asking the dead riders’ family. He faces possible dismissal depending on the outcome, which is due within weeks.

See his blog entry in full here: http://www.north-wales.police.uk/en/blogs/viewblog.asp?UID=1&CID=227

Brunstrom's blathering wrote:
‘A good walk spoiled’.

I took advantage of the windless weekend weather to get up into the hills, twice. On Saturday afternoon I went up Siabod, coming back along the summit ridge, a remarkably pleasant easy scramble. There were quite a few people on the top but the air was still, the silence broken only by the calls of the ravens - and the all-pervading and incessant high-pitched whine of the motorbikes revving up and down through the gears on the roads beneath. The other traffic was almost inaudible, but the bikes were most certainly not. Quite remarkably intrusive.

On Sunday I got up early and was on the top of Tryfan, my favourite hill, before 0700hrs. The air was still again, and this time the silence was total. Bliss. I carried on over the Glyderau, then Y Garn and finally Elidir Fawr. A wonderful walk. I returned from Elidir Fawr to Ogwen Cottage via the summit of Y Garn again - but by then the bikes were filling the whole Ogwen valley with noise. Not quite so badly as the previous day perhaps (they have to go slowly at Ogwen Cottage), but enough to really irritate, even while on the summits at over 1000m. It is astonishing how the sound carries, to my mind substantially spoiling the ambient grandeur.

Mark Twain was of course famously referring to golf - he lived in another age before the ubiquity of the internal combustion engine - but I hope he would understand my borrowing of his phrase as my title today. National Parks are supposed to be for quiet enjoyment (amongst other things). Noise pollution is a real nuisance, and the cause of much urban friction with which we in the police routinely have to deal. Traffic noise is part of this problem, and is often controlled near residential areas by the imposition of environmental speed limits and low-noise surfaces (the A55 through Colwyn Bay being a case in point). Perhaps a 40mph speed limit throughout the entire Park would resolve the engine noise issue - and a general slowing down of all traffic might be a further end in itself, giving the National Park more of an identity as an oasis of a calmer life, slightly detached from the everyday hustle and bustle elsewhere. I’m going to consider this some more.

How is that going to resolve engine noise, bikers will just be using lower gears making the same noise. All he’s trying to do is make Wales as unpleasant as he can for bikers and car drivers. He wants Wales for himself, and he can have it. I won’t go there anymore and I’d imagine allot more people will do the same if gets away with a blanket 40mph. Wales will suffer as a result.

Would low revving Harleys be exempt then?

We see a fair bit of that attitude here in Cumbria too. Unfortunately the "blue-rinsers" that tend to populate Councils, park authorities and the like tend to be every bit as selfish as Brunstrom. They are very quick to condemn the "selfishness" of ANYONE who wants something other than what THEY want from a National park!

I wonder if he had a fall on one of his walks whether he'd complain QUITE so much about the noise the rescue helicopter made?

Has anyone asked this fascist how many of his officers have successfully prosecuted any vehicle for excessive noise? If the bikes are breaking the noise regs then by all means act on it.

This self-agrandising twit, with Wordsworth pretentions, is somehow directly connecting speed with noise, which, given the access he has to people who'll tell him it isn't, is worrying.

And anyway thankfully he doesn't get to choose the limits, its not his job. Why oh why don't his local Police Authority tell him to button it. He should be showing no prejudice towards any legal road users.

Fortunately Brunstrom has no power to set speed limits.

I would remind everyone that the New Forest National Park pretty much has a blanket limit of 40mph except for the trunk roads.

As does much of Dartmoor :(

However, neither includes busy primary A-roads of the type that run through Snowdonia, such as the A5 and A470.

Lets all ride past Blunderstorm's house at 30mph in first gear!

He's probably reduced that area to 20mph with a liberal gathering of speed cameras!

For heaven's sake!

I live in a National Park. I find the drunken antics of holiday makers far noisier on a balmy summer (or even soaking wet) evening down in Keswick.

I happen to like the throaty roar of the motot bikes and sports cars. If on my bike or walking the sound of their engines alerts me to fact that they are there and also gives me a clue as to the speed of their approach.

Besides - I appreciate the sound of a sexy little engine and a throaty exhaust.

But on the serious side: the twisties may be NSL but a prudent driver/biker would not be at those speeds. The A5 trunks which run through are in the National Park but disrupt no more than our main A591/A66 etc roads which link us to the outside world just as the A5 through Snowdonia. These roads are not intrunding into "ramblers' or Wainwright's "Paradise" after all

Our Dick needs to get a grip on reality here. By the way of all our toys ... our Jags are the quietest "purrers" The Stag just murmurs in stealth - apart from the one I'm keeping for Wildy's cousin Siegli. He has a first edition. I have one of the last off he conveyor belt. Both prone to the Stag problem of engine overheat when idling in a jam - but when "on song" on a clear run - they are pure joy  :cloud9: The earlier version is a lot noisier though than my later one.

The noisiest? The "Trabant" (also belongs to Wildy's cousin Siegli and I've room in my garage for this too. Am thinking of showing it at the next Sizergh "Classic Event" on his behalf. This car is the ultimate in "naff and higjhly dangerous"

Our Moggies do not go "fast" but their engines at "urban speed mode" are a lot louder than the Jags at top speed.

Dick must set his hearing aid at a lower setting. A hearing aid will pick up such sounds and it can be frustrating for those who use them as engine/mechanical sounds are enhanced.

Why does'nt he just ban cars and bikes from North Wales, any way I don't care as being scammed by his fascists recently I am never going to Wales ever again.

Hell will need to freeze over first. Shame really I was going to retire there.

I hope it is a "proper" Stag engine! (They sound gorgeous) but I, as a mechanic, am fully aware of their foibles! :(

As for Jags!

U cannot beat the 70's/80's V12's

OOOhhh Yesss!

Yah! They purr arround town (I reckon my old V12 is the easiest car I have ever had to maintain at 30 MPH)

BUT! Driven hard!!!!

They were brutal! 60 in first! 100 in second (and then you get going! :D )

I very proud that both these beauties of Best of British in its prime have the original "blue print engines" :cloud9:

When I bought mine - was at Uni. Took out a whopping bank loan to buy it. My Dad was not impressed though  (Even though he had and still has a penchant for Jags but let my eldest brother take custody of his treasured E Type. He still wonders if it was his speed on the M1 which led to a 70 mph clamp down  :hehe: He liked to test out that car. He took us with him. Odd but a bit of "speed in a good old fashioned E Type did not harm us" at all :hehe: )

I think it was my car which attracted my wife initially. Kindred spirits as she was also heavily in debt after buying a motor bike :yikes: :hehe:

Was quite a while after we married when we broke even and became "solvent" again  (Unfortunately our kids consume a fair amount of our ready cash these days  )

:yesyes:

My Dad prefers the Jags of the 60s/ 70s/80s. He calls the current crop  "young pretenders"

Even the current models are quite fesity. Will be a sad day for this country if the marque founders after being put on the market. Odd as there are some interesting cars coming up in R&D there by all accounts.

From memories of doing similar walks in my younger years, I wonder if Mr B will also be campaigning for the RAF to avoid Snowdonia, because the traffic noise rising up from the valley floor was nothing compared to the roar of Hawks, Jaguars, Harriers and Tornados, or the deep rumbling of a Hercules, flying by at/slightly below head height... And by god, did it make a long walk through the mountains complete to see/hear them go by!

I must admit I love seeing them fly over the Mad Cats home. Though their labradors go crazy when they do so.

What about trains? :scratchchin: Their noise on the track and hoots as they go through tunnel resound across the valleys as well  Then there's the good old steam chuffers at Lllangollen :cloud9:

Hmmm! :scratchchin:

:hehe: I should not laugh. Am supposed to be a medic. But somehow the thought of him swearing at a hidden cam on the way down conjures up a most surreal image.

But real poetic justice would be for him to slip up and get pinged himself as no one can claim robotic qualities. We all flicker up and down by slight margins even on bicycles dependent on road and condition.

Or get burgled and get a robot on the other end telling him "for insurance purposes .. your crime number is ..... We can't be bovvered to find your stuff anyway!" Perhaps then he'd realise just how :censored: off the public are becoming these days.

I rather like the Great Orme though. Walked up it. Taken the little tram thingy up it and stayed in that lighthouse hotel too. Was bliss actually. It's quite drop though :yikes:
