The time has come to introduce a second permanent vehicle to the family due to the eldest moving to a school 5 miles away and no realistic public transport system in place.
Hell, I wouldn't let a child use public transport anyway because the government seem to like letting the nonces out, but I digress.

So, my neighbour has a nice little cheap runaround for sale....Ford Fiesta, 1996, 1.1, MOT'd for 10 months, Taxed for 4 months, a bargain at £300.

Now this is the sort of car that is perfect for me in every way.
I only want to use it to go to work & back in Guildford every day (10 miles each way which equals 5000 miles per year). It's is the sort of car that if anything major should go wrong, then I am simply going to walk away from it.
It is the sort of car that if (say) I was involved in an RTA with someone else in 6 months time and it was their fault, I would say give me £150 and it's sorted.
Getting the picture now?

So off we go to find insurance.......

Just for the crack (and because I really thought it would be cheaper), I went for the Pay As You Drive option.

Now I'm over 40, have more no claims bonus than what you can be given credit for, live in a reasonable area as far as crime goes, car would be garaged, etc, etc.

The estimated quote for Pay As You Drive from Norwich Union was £390

Yup, you read that right.....£390 to drive a matchbox car (that makes less horsepower than the starter motor on my bike) to work & back 5 days a week.

Needless to say I declined the offer of insurance with NU and then went & hit confused.com where I eventually got fully comp cover for a more realistic £107.61 from a company called Ibuyeco.

Pay As You Drive is aimed at the young driver market. It is likely that most of that which you quote above as regards age, experience, etc. makes little difference to the policy costs

Even so, it still worked out 4x more expensive and I was limited to 5000 miles per year.

Ergo, if it is 4x more expensive for me (as an average), then surely it is also going to be X times more expensive regardless of age?

The point is, if PAYD ever replaces the standard 10,000 mile per year policy that we all have, then we are going to be paying a hell of a lot more.
