What I hate most is that my arms aren't long enough to read a book normally anymore.

What I do think people have every right to complain about is dodgy eyesight. Touch wood I've been lucky, but children should not routinely be short/long-sighted any more than they've routinely got poor hearing IMHO. People should be able to expect to see without correction until their 50s. Eyes are poorly-functioning and unreliable compared to the rest of the body. I realise that our full-colour, incredibly detailed eyesight is a wonderful, amazing and complicated thing, but if humans were manufactured artificially, I'd consider sight to be the most unreliable "module". It must have been a real PITA for our ancestors (although at least they didn't live long or need to read much).

Agreed. I was always very proud of my eyesight, which used to be perfect - but now, like Big Tone, my arms are too short to read without specs. I can still spot a fox in a covert three fields away, but I can't read the label on a tin in the local shop. But what the hell!

As a matter of fact, many of or ancestors did live long (as a visit to the graveyard in my village church will confirm). It's just that life expectancy at birth (which is the figure statisticians use) was low because so many died in childhood. If you got past that, you had every chance of reaching 70 or 80 or even 90 - although it might very likely have been less in large towns and cities owing to overcrowding, insanitary conditions and poor diet. Us yokels had an advantage there! The problem today is that life is too often artificially prolonged.

Incidentally, how accurate were your guesses as to the ages of the "usual suspects" on this site?

I'm the other way - I'm short sighted so have always been able to read books easily (if close to) without glasses. Until recently, with my distance glasses on, I've been able to read newspapers, small print etc, although if settling down to read a book I've always taken my glasses off.

But now I find myself having to take my glasses off to read the print on things like food and drink packages, which makes me look like an old bloke :(

18 with 32 years experience...

When my photo is taken these days, the image reveals, instead of the golden-haired, svelte Adonis that should be there, a bald, pot-bellied old fart in bifocals that magically appears in front of me, just at the point the shutter operates. I wish he would bugger off and bother someone else!

20/52 = 38%
20/32 = 62.5%

Or...

- The year from age 1 to age 2 is a whole subjective lifetime
- The year from age 10 to age 11 is 10% of a subjective lifetime
- The year from age 100 to age 101 is 1% of a subjective lifetime

So we shouldn't be surprised that the years pass faster and faster.

Sorry, but we were a lot younger then! 8-)

It's not that bad. I liken myself to a fine wine. I get better with vintage maturing

My wife and kids do not agree. They call me a grumpy old fart most of the time

Besides - you are not soe many year old. You are so many years young

I think from age 1 to age 2 is only 50% of a subjective lifetime, but I get the gist.
I only hope you don't use such manipulated mathematics to come up with your speed stats

Sometimes feels like I'm just Running up that Hill.
Can't you guys put your incredible heads together and come up with a time machine?

Ah, another Capricorn type troublemaker. Good!

Anyhow, greetings to you, Oscar. Do you fancy a tootle out together sometime? I see you're only just up the road from me.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

No mistake. This is the 'mark up' and 'gross profit' question in a different form. Cost £1, mark-up 100%, selling price £2, gross profit 50%. It changes depending on which 'price' you use as the reference.

I worded the example to use the first year as the reference.

Very decent of you, thanks. Accepted.

But there was no need. I wasn't offended in the slightest. I'm sorry if it looked as if I was; probably (and with hindsight) the 'Ouch' should have had a smiley.

There you go ... and I thought I might be the grand-daddy of the site :-) Seems that I am about fourth in line.

I'm 58... And liken myself more to a 1903 Daracq... Old, slow, unreliable... and frequently need starting by hand.
