taking the A1 as an example, why are they allowed? a 25 MPH vehicle (unless its uphill) on a road that sees most traffic doing over twice that. they rarely pull over and when one of us (artics) gets to the front of the queue, it is mile after mile of slow traffic.

speaking of the A1, why is it not dualled? its one of 2 major arterial routes across the borders yet much of it is single carriageway.

In many cases because the farm was there before the road!

(Many farms have been "Split" by more recent road building)

Whilst this doesnt help you, it is dificult to see how an "Economical" and fair solution to the problem may be arrived at.

Pulling in places for slow vehicles to allow traffic behind to clear would help, and be cheaper and quicker than dualing.

I understand what you mean Scanny, with lorries behind the slow-pokes making it impossible for other traffic to pass. Hopefully the drivers will have the flexibility in their schedule to be able to hang back a few lengths to allow the faster traffic to 'leapfrog'. I find lorry drivers to be quite considerate most of the time, and hopefully they realise that this small thing would make a huge difference to the flow on the road. If only the agricultural vehicle drivers would be equally considerate to pull over from time to time!

Having followed a tractor towing a huge amount of haybales for five miles, followed by a man in a 'heritage' lowloader with a steamroller on the back for five miles, who thought "When shall I move my steam roller at 20 mph along an SC A road? I know! Friday night rush hour!", this is a bit of a sore point just now.
