Just how visible do the speed lollipops have to be?
I know if a sign is not visible and I was caught over the limit, I might have a defence... but what about the general public who might just pay up not knowing they were actually innocent?

I ask, because in Cumbria at present, numerous road signs and speed limit signs are virtually invisible to anyone not searching for them.
I have not got the time to keep the Highways Authority informed, but nobody is informing the public either.

This is a typical scenario - made worse by the low sun. Many more are worse, and some become obscured when the wind blows the branches of summer foliage across the signs.

things are not helped when the sign itself is turning GREEN because it has not been cleaned.
This does not happen in France - road signs are kept scrupulously clean, AND visible, and verges are trimmed REGULARLY to ensure sight lines are not obscured either.

The sign above HAS actually had the foliage clipped back once this year.... after I emailed the HA hotline... but it's now difficult to see as you arrive in Kendal on the A6 from Shap.

Anyone else have this problem, or is it just Cumbria?

It is defenatly a problem in hants. we have hidden signs, part hidden signs, green covered signs, signs where some of the red band is missing and signs where the red band is orange

This approach has been endorsed by Attorney General ever since 1951. CPS Code

One thing I've noticed is that because hedges are generally cut by big tractor attachments nowadays, the bit of foliage round a sign often gets missed (as operator doesn't want to wrap trimmer round sign), so after a year or two you have a mini-bush growing round the sign, even though hedge is being cut regularly.

My favourite subject!

You think those are bad? Try this...

It wouldn't be so bad, but for the fact that this sign comes shortly after this.

It's a deliberate ploy by the PITA camera brigade to improve their chances of nicking you for speeding.

Just 100 yards up the lane from where I live there's a destriction sign - yes, a DERESTRICTION SIGN - that's partially obscured, so I must get out and do a bit of trimming. I wouldn't want to overlook it.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Disgusting. Yet another thing which shows that safety is absolutely nothing to do with current enforcement practices.
