Hi all,

Yet another speed camera scare for me and hoping to get people's opinions about this one. Yesterday (Sun 12 Aug) I got caught up in the M40 closure (northbound). Loads of detours, bumper to bumper, etc… with a screaming 1 month old baby in the back, wanting fed, etc…

After 3.5 hours of inconvenience to help the police I eventually get back on M40, going north, and decide to travel 80mph instead of 70mph to get home, mainly for the sake of the baby.

Anyway, around Junction 14 of the M6 (going north) I come around a corner in the fast lane and I see about ½ mile in front of me, a bridge going over the M6 and I see something in the middle of the bridge not moving. I drive on, still looking I then notice it’s a policeman with his eye up to one of them mobile cameras. I immediately break to 70mph. At that point I was half way to it from the initial corner (travelled about 1/3 mile).

Passing the bridge, about 1 – 1.5 mile later at the next junction I seen a car pulled over just down the hill to the roundabout below with an undercover black police car but had its lights flashing. I’m thinking maybe it’s a scam cam…? Not sure.

That’s my first question, what’s people’s opinions on it being a speed detector or scam van? I didn’t see any speedcam warning signs anywhere leading up to the corner just before I seen the camera on the bridge. Can they legally still do this without the signs?

Also, the 3 lanes of traffic I’d say were quite full but still able for me to travel at 80mph in the fast lane but room for very little more speed though. How many detections can these types of cam’s make in around 20 seconds? Considering there was a lot of vehicles in the 3 lanes travelling, can it catch them all? Do they work one at a time, or many at a time?

Would they concentrate on the fast lane the whole time or all three lanes?

Any advice is appreciated and sorry for the jackanory above.

Almost certainly not a speed camera. Probably ANPR looking for green Rovers with guns poking out.

I'm thinking that if police are out with speed detection on a night after such mayhem on the M40, its extremely unfair and will tarnish further their reputation.

Sooooo, annoyed with the major inconvenience I had yesterday.

Further points from others are still welcomed though.

I'm sure the biker who was killed and the Hells Angels were pretty p*ssed off too

If you were doing 80mph on the speedo then in reality you were probably doing more like 76-77mph as all speedos overread by up to 10%. They don't prosecute until at least 79mph.
