Hi there

This is my first post so forgive me if I cover some old ground.

My main gripe with speed is the people that drive much to slow, I live in the countryside and often get stuck behind drivers that cruise at 25-25 on 50-60 mph roads. This causes massive frustration and people take risks to get past. I don't thin I ever look at my speed on these roads unless I am held up - I hope I just drive within safe limits.

My other pet hate with safety is people's lack of attention. Grr - is that as much of a cause of accidents as I would imagine?

There are lots of things that can slow you down on country roads. Tractors, Hores, Cylists etc. Not just drivers. I am more chilled about it than I used to be. My daughter has just started riding a scooter to the stables where her horse is kept (about 5 miles into the country). The scooter is speed limited to 30 mph. I do worry about here out on the country roads with "impatient" traffic.

I think the issue is probably more tha there are so few passing places available on our roads. You can get stuck for miles.

I have no problem with users that have to go slow. I cycle and have loads of patience for these people. It is just the people that can go at a reasonable speed but just plod along looking out of the side windows and forgetting that they have a responsibilty to other people. I got behind a couple the other day that were doing 15 on a 50, a 50 that would be sfae at 70!! I couldn't safely get past and it was a pain. They were pointing at things on the side!! Crazy!!!

Hmm. There's nothing wrong with driving slowly so long as you show consideration for those who may want to pass.

Would you have been annoyed if you were held up by the late lamented Fred Dibnah in his steam traction engine?

I can think of several times I have driven well below the NSL because I was taking elderly relatives on a scenic drive, and have invited other drivers to pass.

A more serious issue is the people who drive at about 40 mph on high-quality rural A-roads, and then maintain that speed unchanged when entering an urban area.

Indeed - this, rather than excessive speed as such - is almost certainly the single biggest cause of accidents.

Try Natracalm Passiflora - It'll help you to be calm.

My mum got pulled up for slowing once on the A5 near the M6. Very funny indeed. She was stuck behind a horse box, and in no rush so added to the queue. It still makes me smile. Not sure why horse boxes have to be driven at walking pace though.

The b road past work get more than it's share of slowers too. They trundle along in their trilbys at 35 mph then where it goes down to a 30 (past 2 schools) they keep at 35. Genius.

Hello and welcome Kylie :D
We have a piece of road A4059, and now and fairly often, I see motorists going allong it at 35-40mph. Now some of them may be playing it safe with me behind them, but having stopped a few, most of them simply don't know the speed limit on that road due to lack of reminders put on the roadside. This probably accounts for more slow driving, than people enjoying the sights. Either way it can be very frustrating for other motorists who wish to make maximun and lawfull best progress.

I think you have hit on something there Neil. How many times have you been in an urban area and been unsure of the speed limit. 30, 40 or even 50. So you go slower than you might otherwise safely drive and additionally divert much of your attention searching for: the sign, the camera, the police!

Granted much of what I describe could be due to poor observation in the first place but much is down to poor signage and paranoia.

Max
