My youngest daughter has turned 16. She wanted t get a bike but didn't want to go the scooter route like the rest of her friends. She is also a big fan of the late Indian Larry.

I let her decide the design, accessories and paint job and we had great fun collecting the parts.

Basicaly it is a new 50cc AJS raptor with the following mods
Handle bar wiring hidden
Harley front pegs
Custom mirrors
Custom grips
Custom indicators
Number plate re-located with conceled ilumination
New paing job
Custom tail light and modified rear fender

Image

She loves the bike. She is already planning the 125 she wants to build when she is 17.....that my girl

Thats pretty cool, encourage her as much as you can in her quest....you never know, one day she might be the star of the "fly on the wall" series of custom bike builders found on Sky TV.

each to their own :)

I have never liked choppers (It's like driving a number 9 bus  )

but I am 100 % behind you , so encourage your daughter to be a biker and she will meet real people and turn out to be a real well rounded person and will never come out with stupid tv things like 'Those shoes are SO last year' :o :)

Ah - so the apple doesn't fall far from the tree eh? :)

At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite - as much as I love motorbikes I think I would discourage my daughter if she wanted to go down the same route as myself but I admire and respect both of you for doing it. As we often hear; it isn't the rider that I would be concerned about as such but all the other mad buggers out there. :yikes:

That said, if she really wanted to have one I would feel a great sense of pride and I'd back her to the hilt. Not sure how I would sleep at night though. :fastasleep:

I just hope she's going to be safe bud. I've no doubt she's got a great teacher and mentor in dad.

Bike looks nice BTW. :) Looks heavy actually, with the solid wheels and big tyre. Personally I have always thought the 50cc motorbikes should be banned or at least de-restricted because they can't keep up with the traffic at all times, which is dangerous IMHO.

I agonsed over the safety aspects of motorcycling. I was never alowed one when I was a teenager ad my parents were dead against it.

You cannot wrap them up in cotton wool.

I would rather she ride a motorcycle than smoke of binge drink

Having teenagers is not an easy thing and it is difficult to have the right balance but I would rather them be sensible about what they do than do stuff behing our back because we are being too restrictive as I have seen with some of her friends.

I couldn't agree more. It's just a worry because of the vulnerability and I see the down side of it at work, so I guess it all plays on my mind more than most.

My friend at work who has just recently joined us here at SS, (big53al), is in your very same position. I nagged him into posting :)

http://www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15689

He's a vetaran car driver and not had a motorbike before but has bought one to join his daughter's love of them. I'm sure he won't mind me saying his daughter is doing great and loving every minute and so is he.

Shame we're going into the winter now but let's hope there's plenty more good days.

I applaud her judgement or your powers of persuasion  . Those scooters really are death traps IMHO.

Bike looks good and something she will remember in her twilight years I suspect.

Really? When I rode my friend's Burgman 400 it was great! The brakes were better than on my big Kwack, the handling was good and as for the comfort - BRILL!

He can get two full face helmets under the seat and the riding position for the passenger was great too, you can see over the riders head.

I really couldn't criticize it at all. Give one a try, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

A 16 year old would not, legally, be able to ride a Burgman. Funnily though, I don't think of those as scooters. More like a recumbent motorcycle

Whilst I can agree to an extent, I do think that these kids (God, I sound old! :( ) riding these scooters will gain a vast amount of roadsense early on, rather than just go straight into a car. Hopefully, the scooter generation today will be tomorrow's better drivers, at least hopefully towards motorcyclists!

I don't recall seeing it.

Amen to that.

It's not that I'm against kids riding scooters, I just think that the restrictions placed on them, e.g. <30mph top speed on most scooters; small wheels and automatic clutches, are ridiculous and seem to increase the danger to the rider.

Blimey, where do you live? The kids on scooters by me are all hoisting wheelies, and rarely travel at less than 30mph!

totally agree with R1. I will be making my kids wait until they are 17, so that they can at least get a bike which can keep up with traffic.

30mph means you are basically constantly in harms way. alternatively it can of course be de-restricted, but that is illegal.
