looks like it has finally been proved the congestion in greater manchester is being engineered by the councils, as car numbers have gone quite a bit down in the last 6 years.

This proves what we have been saying for ages - congestion is self limiting. Councils just make it worse.

Unfortunately nothing happens when so called " authority " lies. Maybe one or two get sacked but once something like this is started it is rarely stopped.

Not really - have you been to central Manchester recently? It's full of shiny new office and residential tower blocks.

Agree with PeterE, nothing to do with unemployment and low wages as I believe Manchester has enjoyed an economic renaissance over the last 10 years and the traffic is mainly people travelling into work. It probably has more to do with parking than anything else, possibly the metro and rail links. The trains from Liverpool to Manchester at peak times are usually bursting at the seams with very little standing room by the time you reach Manchester. However, off peak plenty of room.

Mmmmh! Well.......

Re. "the trains"....I have to ask! Are you asking a "privatised" railway company" TO BUY EXPENSIVE coaches and run them in order to provide extra seats just in case they are needed?.......having them run empty after rush hour?

Maybe they're deliberately UNDER running them to keep seats at a "premium" .....and the seating price, therefore "profits" at a Max!

Or maybe the OLD .......Nationalised "Public Service" ethic was correct....

It may have been OLD and under funded, but it was Cheap, and it ran!.....
And it provided a service.............Much maligned and under funded for decades IMO.

WE, the taxpayer, are giving far MORE to the "Private Train Companies" NOW than we EVER did to "British Rail"...........

No wonder they: ..."privatised" it!................(shakes head)

To Draco, No I was not thinking of asking for more carriages, I used the crowding on the trains as an example of the amount of people who go into Manchester to work. No doubt someone will confirm many travel in the opposite direction as well.

Regards

My experience in Rome on holiday this year is that massive congestion causes people to look at alternatives. In Rome this is evident in the HUGE numbers of motorscooters and motorbikes in and around the historic city centre.

Needless to say, the weather in Rome is conducive to this form of transport, unlike Manchester, so perhaps people in Manchester really are taking to the trains and trams for work-based travel(limited though they are, unlike London with its huge network). As the buses are subject to the same congestion, I can't see them benefiting very much !!
