Today, my wife and a friend went for a drive along a very narrow rural lane. Our friend who was driving decided that a safe speed for the lane was about 20mph.

A CSO car suddenly appeared heading towards us at about 40 mph, forcing her to take evasive action by driving into the hedgerow.

When we reached the end of the lane we saw what the CSO would have seen. A very large sign stating that the speed limit was 25mph, as it was some sort of special "slow lane." :o

And only a couple of weeks ago I had to jump out of the way as two CSOs were riding their bikes two abreast on the pavement.

What use, exactly, are CSOs?

I have never seen a 25mph speed limit in the UK, only ever :20: and :30:.

What you probably saw was a "Max Speed 25mph" sign, which is purely advisory and has no legal significance whatsoever. Generally I find that in any reasonably competent car made in the last 20 years or so the actual max safe speed is around double what these signs claim, unless you are carrying eggs or are allergic to g forces.

Of course on this specific corner the max safe speed may well have been lower. If you had to take evasive action because there is no way they could have stopped then it most likely was, but they haven't exceeded a speed limit and we all know how well non-speed-limit related laws are enforced these days, right?

The road was really unsafe at any speed over 25mph as it was rutted. Still as PCO Bozo does not own the car, why would he bother about that?

Oddly enough, no. There was no :nsl: on the road! I was expecting the road to be :nsl: but there was only the 25mph speed limit, plus a sign about it being a special "Quiet Lane". Obviously a concept alien to CSO Dimwit.

He should be worried - the amount of paperwork involved plus the fact that a supervising officer would need to be called to attend the scene if a police vehicle were involved in an RTC should be a real disincentive!

I once had a dink down a narrow twisty country lane because coming the other way was a Volvo 240 at speed. If he'd had something smaller than a house on wheels we could have passed each other.

There should be a law, (oh no, not another), Well ok then... something prohibiting people taking things down country lanes which are the size of a bloody house!

Rant over

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

Funnily enough only today I had the joy of being stuck behind a coach on a narrow country lane with nice tights bends who had to keep shoving it in the hedge and coming to a complete stop every time something came the other way. To top it off when I finaly ended up leaving him he was nearly back on a main road (and he had just turned of one when I got behind him) so it was completly unecessary for him to use the lanes as he didnt stop any where on them.

One near here does too. They seem to have a red car with "community support officer" stuck on with white backed stickers. If I had a camera I'd have taken photos and uploaded them to BarryBoys...
I saw (heard) the guy driving it down the road in second gear. I think it wanted to be in third.

The "Quiet Lane" signs were defined in the The Traffic Signs (Amendment) Regulations 2006 and are in the latest Know Your Traffic Signs (5.9 MB) (which also has 26 pages on parking restrictions). They appear to carry no legal meaning or have any enforceability.
They are in effect just another distraction.

The CSOs in the West Mercia have cars that, unless you look hard, appear to be ordinary police cars.
