MINDLESS – Laurence McCourt died after building materials fell on to his lorry as it passed under a bridge on the A45 in July
Police appeal after more objects thrown at vehiclesBy Alan Short CHILDREN have been urged to stop throwing objects at cars from bridges before another driver is killed.
Police are seriously concerned after a spate of incidents of brick-throwing has been reported since the beginning of the school holidays.
A number of motorists driving along Oakley Road in Corby this week have had objects thrown at them and officers are growing concerned there will be a repeat of the incident near Wellingborough in which a lorry driver was killed three months ago.
The most serious incident in the recent spate saw a driver escape serious injury when yobs threw debris at his car, denting the bonnet and smashing the windscreen.
The incident happened on the same stretch of the A45 where the lorry driver was killed.
A driver was travelling under the footbridge on the A45 at Ditchford at 6.40am when he was hit by a rock, smashing the windscreen of his car.
Other motorists have had items thrown at them on the A45 this week.
A police spokesman said: "These actions are extremely dangerous and objects that are thrown at moving vehicles could result in accidents that cause serious injury or even death.
"The children who are throwing these missiles almost certainly have no idea how irresponsible or potentially dangerous this sort of activity is.
"They are doing this for a dare or for a bit of excitement with their mates and it is time to get the message home, not only to children but also to responsible parents, guardians and teachers that this is not acceptable.
"All such incidents are taken very seriously and police will use all the available powers to deal with people throwing objects at vehicles."
The appeal comes three months after 68-year-old lorry driver Laurence McCourt, of Sandwell, Birmingham, was killed when building materials fell on to the cab of his vehicle during the early hours of Friday, July 27.
Two teenagers from Wellingborough have been accused of his murder.
They appeared at Kettering Magistrates Court last month and were told to return to the youth court on Friday, November 9, when their case will be sent for committal.
