A couple of weeks ago, I put the added the following caustic 'attributes', and expected a hail of abuse and denial. Yet none came. I can only assume that most men recognise these vain traits in themselves –

Quote:

Men more likely to wonder 'do these leathers/this car etc. make me look macho?'
Men more likely to wonder 'is the braking distance of the LZR100a better than the EXUSplus model?'
Men more likely to think ‘these other motorists feel envious because I have such a wonderful car/motorbike/laptop/mobile phone… (delete as appropriate)’.
Men more likely to think ‘I wish I had a better car/motorbike/laptop/mobile phone (delete as appropriate) so that I don’t have to envy these other motorists ’.
Men more likely to think ‘that bit of overtaking/cornering/braking/parking(!) has showed them up for the laggards that they are’.
Men more likely to feel they can “win” by accelerating/overtaking/cornering/braking/parking(!).
Men more likely to look at their own reflection in a shop window while passing on their car/motorbike/whatever.
Men more likely to think ‘I am indestructible today’.
Men more likely to think of “revenge scenarios” for motorists who have overtaken them.


I'd add one more to the list. Men are more likely to think 'this number plate that shows my car is new will really impress everybody, and they will think I'm rich!'. Are all men in a peer-pressure induced marketing narcolepsy? Surely some visitors to this site have not yet been hypnotised by the Top Gear brigade. Are you all vain to the core?

I noticed it and dismissed it immediately as verbal flatulence. Do you really think it deserves to be taken seriously?

No, but I do recognise them in other men. :P

That's an interesting one. Depending on how he thinks in other ways that could be positive, negative or neutral. Postive if he's interested in all the safety aspects of the car, negative if he views it as an excuse to thrash it past the old folk's home, and neutral if he's just a specifications nerd.

Seriously, if your list is about male drivers tending to be a bit shallow and over competitve compared to females I'm not about to argue. I've been guilty of two or three of those in the past, but now approaching middle age and fartyhood I'm far less prone. Can't remember the last time any of those crossed my mind in fact. Most never have... admiring my reflection in a shop window? Not a pretty sight! :lol:

Men seem much more keen to 'campaign for genuine road safety', and vent their spleen on forums such as this.

Why does this not interest women to the same degree?

After all, theyre every bit as vocal as males are on road safety issues. I spent a half-day at Asda on Saturday listening to peoples concerns about road safety, among other issues. I was very surprised by the number of camera fans there are around, and the female/male differential was quite noticeable.

I would venture an explanation for that: women tend to be less interested in abstract matters.

I suspect you'll find men outnumber women in pretty much every discussion forum on the internet apart from those reflecting specific female concerns.

You'll also find a majority of your local IAM or RoADA branch to be men. Not to mention your own police traffic division.

I suspect the "camera fans" tend to be those who drive short distances on familiar roads. Once they venture a bit off their usual patch and get pinged by a Talivan on a wide-open 30 mph dual carriageway they may see it differently :evil:

That's a great example! I used (pre-children) to stir up this kind of thing at public houses. The idea was park your bum on a stool near the bar around 6:00 pm, and then smoke and drink yourself into oblivion while arguing about this kind of thing. Strangely, women don't seem to enjoy this as much as I do. I actually think the Internet is sort of the same thing, only it doesn't end in fisticuffs!

I'm not surprised, because nowadays I read the liberal papers, and they are full of people with the same ideas as me. Basically, the speeders are blokes. I really think we need, not to demonise speeders, but to
de-men-ise speeders, i.e. stop them acting like men!
