They want us to trust them with ID cards, all our info in one place?

ah yes, i saw that too - brilliant (not for those whose records have been lost obviously) isn't it? Absolutely ridiculous.

I don't think it's new news though, I'm sure information on this surfaced a couple of months back, but it's now being confirmed - either that or something similar happened with other important information a short while ago

He added: "If someone is the innocent victim of fraud as a result of this incident, people can be assured they have protection under the Banking Code so they will not suffer any financial loss as a result."

He's obviously never tried getting his money back from a bank. It took one of our friends months to get his money back when some :censored: emptied his account. Eventually he did get his money back but the bank could not have made his life much more difficult in the mean time.

This is absolutely scandalous not just the loss, but the sheer incompetence in the manner it has been handled since....
Quote:
The data was sent on 18 October and senior management at HMRC were told it was missing on 8 November and the chancellor on 10 November.

So the Chancellor knew on the tenth, and the potential victims get to find out on the 20th!!!!

:gatso2: I read this on the NO2ID forum. The anti-ID card advocates are having a ball! :rotfl:

Looks like a very good reason to have any benefits paid over the PO counter.

So they wouldn't do that, then.

The story only gives out that Child Benefit data was lost ( or so the Sky News and BBC stories go). Any other information coming out ??Just worried that there's more to this than said and perhaps other payment data has been lost.

This is only a recent example of this happening.

And I am sure there are many other examples that we, the public, who pay for it all, do not get to hear about.

This is a real bummer for those involved. DOB's, childrens names, mothers maiden names, all the stuff that is default security on accounts and can't be changed, all together on file, a fraudsters dream.

And why? Apparently the benefit people told the customs they didn't want all the confidential info- didn't need it- but the customs insisted on sending "everything" cos it was cheaper than removing the unrequired data.

Then it was cheaper to use unsecure means to move the disks around.

Ironically it's the customs that have adopted a holier-than-thou attitude towards me for exceeding the VAT threshold, and are being rather punative. Shame they can't work to the same standards they expect of others.

I can't understand why they need to move disks around in this day and age. Even my broadband at home could download a DVDs worth of data in an hour or two and I'm sure the government has better connections than me.

Ah - but that is liable to interception, and is a security risk!!

Of course - I forgot electronic communication is only suitable for all our centralised NHS records

That sort of stuff should be stored on a secure database server located within the HM Revenues building itself protected by physical barriers (electronically locked reinforced fireproof doors) and multiple software and hardware firewalls. There should be one machine with a static ip and multiple security measures in place at the other building which has a VPN link to the server set up for just one connection at any one time.
