I heard a fascinating conversation today between a couple of executive types.

Exec 1. Going to have to get one of these road angel things

Exec 2. There a bit expensive aren't they?

Exec 1. Yeah, they are a bit, but you should have seen the smoke coming from my tyres today when I saw the speed camera.

Well to me that conversation proves two points.

1. It's because of prats like this we have seen an explosion in the number of speed camera's.

2. It just proves that scamera's cannot catch dangerous drivers, only speeding drivers, if he hit his brakes that hard, his motor was quite new, so imagine it had ABS, ALB, then he must have been travelling well in excess of sensible and safespeed.

3. These guys were, as I said, executive types, visiting a major power station, so would assume they are leaders of men, God help us.

To all who try this in front of Durham's cops - they would fry when hot smoking air met our brand of acid!

If these two executive planks lurk on here by any chance - then I would suggest a look at Paul's tips on advance driving and the all the hot tips on the Driver Improvement Forum - paying very close attention to the "attitude" thread.

True. Minority has always caused problems for the majority.

Not someone conversant with COAST.

Nor particularly good at spotting big lollipop signs and bright yellow objects either.

This type also don't seem to notice a police car either!

I am really surprised that a firm does not expect IAM standard or at least offer IAM training for reps - especially if they run company cars for them.

Am sure traffic offences must affect the firm's motor insurance policies in some way.

After all - as I represent the police and am to some extent an "ambassador" for the force both on and off duty - then a sales rep represents the firm. Slip shod driving and prangs on the car give an impression as to the firm's quality of goods and services!

Modern managers  Not very bright either.

Sounds like exaggeration to me. One doesn't normally get any smoke under braking with ABS. And if that part is exaggerated, we shouldn't really be drawing any conclusions about the rest, except perhaps to know that these guys are worried about speed cameras.

Can't happen on your patch. You guys don't have cameras

In any case, his ABS couldn't have been working if he smoked his tyres.

Regards
Peter

One of the problems with speed cameras, fixed or mobile is that people do brake when they see them, often regardless of the speed they are doing.
Several years back whilst driving through a 30 limit, at 30, the driver in front braked very hard down to 15 mph because she had seen a police speed trap ahead, we were doing 30 mph, I had a safe braking distance, but it still caused me to over brake to avoid rear ending her.
I live close to a fixed speed camera, we did have one that covered our pedestrian crossing but for profit reasons a new speed camera was placed further up the road & further away from the alleged dangerous junction.
So we now have a road where cars brake, then accelerate over a pedestrian crossing, then have a few hundred yards more to pick up speed before crossing a light controlled crossing & then about 100 yards after that they pass the alleged dangerous junction, it only takes ten minutes standing at our pedestrian crossing to see the brake accelerate pattern & with some dangerous drivers this can be extreme.

Or, last point translated into what he was actually thinking....

Exec 1. Yeah, they are a bit, but the other day I only saw a camera at the last minute and it made me jump, so I braked fairly hard for a moment before I realised I wasn't actually speeding anyway. But I'll exaggerate as it makes me sound macho rather than a complete dork, even though most people know that even in a non-ABS car that can make the tyres smoke, the driver is the last person likely to actually see it.

Yep, I'll go for that, sounds much better now that someone has explained it better than I did.
Actually, I did sort of see them as being dork type people sounding off, just didn't write it down.
