Guy at work got his stolen a few weeks ago. It was used in petrol station drive-aways. Since then he has been bombarded with letters from petrol companies asking for proof the car was not his.

Can't believe this. It must be the bikers who only tax for the summer months and delare SORN for the winter.

Otherwise the level of government and Police incompetence that allows 40% of bikes to be untaxed is breathtaking.

Not forgetting the track only or racing bikes which are never ridden on the road and thus never taxed

Stick someone else's numberplate on, go for free fuel. They probably won't even look at your face because they have spy cameras all over the place to record the numberplates. Or wear something to cover your face.
Fuel tax is ridiculously expensive so it's no wonder it's happening.

The petrol station owners should go after the government for lost earnings.

If it gets too big a problem, I wouldn't be surprised if filling stations start requiring payment upfront... Pay at Pump used to give them this (and was a handy way of avoiding the kiosk queues), but the scrotes just started using stolen cards (no PIN required, doh!) so it's been ages since I saw a pump where the PaP panel hasn't been locked out of use

Really? There aren't many with pay-at-pump around here but they are all still in use.
The only one I know of which isn't Tesco (yellow place, can't remember which garage it is) even uses the smart card interface and you have to enter your PIN.
The Tesco lady said (last month) they will be replacing theirs "soon". The card reader on the pump I normally use has gone shitey and as they were open I went in and mentioned it.

In the gas stations I used in Florida they have a crazy situation where it is normal to pay at the pump but you have to enter your credit card ZIP code. If you don't have a ZIP code you go through the routine of going into the shop with your card first, telling them how much fuel you want (!), filling up, and going back in again for a receipt.

Yup, I haven't seen any active Pay at Pump facilities around these 'ere parts for a while - the big Tesco station (which was the first place I encountered PaP) abandoned it over a year ago (it was before we moved house, and that was 15 months ago...) citing the use of stolen cards as the reason, and the last time I called in there for fuel a couple of months ago it was still pump first, pay later. All the other stations I knew of with PaP facilities also then abandoned it around the same time, or not all that long after.




Mmm, I was thinking about Florida stations when I wrote that - I still remember (from a family holiday back in the early 90's) my parents finding the "guess how much fuel you can get in your tank" idea a bit weird... Then again, perhaps Floridian drivers would consider our "fill the tank till the pump clicks off, then play Topping-off Roulette to see how much more fuel you can squeeze into the tank and filler neck before the next click is accompanied by a dribble of fuel down the side of your vehicle" method of filling up to be equally weird

Er/.. SORN is free .. no cash. BUT.. DVLA has the record of SORN and SORN does NOT count as "evaded VED". You are allowed to drive a SORN if on way to get MOT.. but not if on way to Post Office to get said VED disc


In theory .. we should hit those who take the VED disc with them when they park. Traffic wardens might do. A real who uses his brain cell will check with DVLA and realise said biker has had his VED stolen in past as vehicle check reveals he has one. We like to use professional discretion on this. The Mad Cats and Swiss call it "commons sense"

I call it discretion but we will still have a friendly chat with the biker anyway about the law's requirements. - because we have to.

To the biker who alllegedly rides in the nude at high speed past the Truvelo on his ride into Central Manchester.. I am sure Stephen will be on the alert now Do that here.. and I can think of umpteen charges to warm up those goose bumps


As for sticking VED on already high priced pump prices..

OK fine in theory .. but we have to fill and runs already. This would increase this crime really and those who are already paying a high price will be paying a lot more..

It's why me and the Swiss idiots wer/are e against the third party insurance idea on petrol. No guarantee it will fund this given the "crock pot" which all state revenue goes into Low mileage users could be able to claim more than their input .. and the danger that the repair will be somehow "sub-standard" - or compo not to level required by nature of the injury caused either. Most will take out fully comp and be paying twice over just as they are to the the MIB as at present in the surcharged levy on current premiums.

No VED can mean no insurance and no licence. All cars in Durham's fleet are "ubiquitous".. and we use the in-car toys here. Please be warned .. we use professional discretion .. but we are not fools or easily fooled either

Our tools will tell us if DVLA have updated records. We will allow a 7 day producer grace and a 14 day grace on VED production - with this latter as just a "rule of thumb" as I would not want those travelling here to get the wrong impressiojn

Police are understanding and not unreasonable to any member of the public. At least ... here in Durham where fair play, professionalism and justice matter .

Funnily enough, today is exactly a year to the day since my number plates were stolen. I didn't get any speeding fines or anything until 8 months later when I was pulled over by a traffic cop (since my number plate was marked stolen in the PNC -- shows how many traffic cars are out there that I was effectively driving around with a stolen car for 8 months before being spotted).

Once the copper had checked my details and decided I wasn't the thief, he said that the number plate had been used on a white van in a petrol station drive-off, but I've never had any letters or anything to my house about it.
