:gatso2: I saw an item on the BBC lunchtime news on February 11 regarding LA's who want to turn off streetlights to combat climate change :rotfl: and save money and so on.

The downside of this was that criminals might like to work under the cover of darkness and it may cause accidents, pavement tripping etc.

The BBC set about interviewing a concerned resident of a housing estate. As they interviewed her, at least three times the camera kept focusing on the 4x4 that she owned. In fact it was never out of shot at any time.

:?:Trying to tell us something Auntie Beeb? Planting environmentally friendly propaganda messages are we?

The estate in Hampshire (Fishlake Meadows) where this was trialled is 600 yards from my factory and several of my staff live there. The trial was carried out with no pre-warning and several residents phoned the council to complain about the "fault" with the lights. Romsey is a countryside market town and Fishlake is a "middle class ghetto" so it's hardly surprising that a large number of 4x4s abound.

My locals tell me that they don't really like the "pitch darkness" and all they do is put on their porch or outside lights so they can see to be safe. So, the cost of electricity is transferred to the householder rather than the Council. However, streetlights are much more efficient than most household lights so very little energy is saved.

One of my staff told me about a burglary in the period of darkness but there is no real evidence of crime increasing - yet.

It's like going back to the Second World War.

It's got nothing to do with global warming. This sudden purge on global warming is just an excuse to cut electricity usage because the governments' have left it too late to make a decision on building new power stations, the so called wind farms are just a quick fix (and keeps the greens happy) until new power stations are built.

Dixie, it will be even worse than that. It will be a council way of trying to cut spending. Though there will be no cut in rates...

You’re quite right. They’re all using it as an additional excuse to jump on the bandwagon :(

Mmm, I heard that southampton were turning off street lamps in alleys to prevent crime.

Although it would be nice if they weren't on all night. Just in the evenings and mornings so we got proper darkness.

I read somewhere that street lamps use energy which would otherwise be wasted elsewhere, as the power stations couldn't just turn off for the night... Not sure how true that is any more with millions of street lamps out there?

Yes, there is a pumped storage scheme near Blaenau. The government had the centre of a mountain in Snowdonia hollowed out. The pumps run, taking the excess from the grid, then they let it through turbines when demand is high. It's supposed to be quite something to see, I'm told.

Here's a picture of an even bigger one:

I was trying to give our English readers an idea of the scale of industrial despoliation in Wales, but I overdid it slightly! I've reduced it now.

It is near Llanberis, somewhere near the terminus of the Mountain Railway. I really have to get back there - it's a great spot.
