Invisible dots left by printers 'breach privacy'
By Bruno Waterfield in Brussels
Last Updated: 1:51am GMT 19/02/2008

European Union justice watchdogs are concerned that "Big Brother" computer printer technology that allows security agencies to track printed documents might breach privacy laws.

Electronic Frontier Foundation: Joining the dots
Most consumers are unaware that many popular colour laser printers, including those made by Brother, Cannon, Xerox and HP, embed almost invisible tracking dots onto documents, uniquely identifying the machine that printed them.

Franco Frattini, European Commissioner for Justice and Security, has launched an investigation after receiving official complaints from Euro-MPs.

"To the extent that individuals may be identified through material printed or copied using certain equipment, such processing may give rise to the violation of fundamental human rights, namely the right to privacy and private life," he said.

"It also might violate the right to protection of personal data."

Satu Hari, a Finnish Euro-MP, has taken up the issue of "forensic tracking mechanisms" after consumers "unsuccessfully asked manufacturers to disable this function".

She has highlighted research by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) finding that technology originally designed to prevent currency counterfeiting might end up as catch-all tool for general surveillance.

Danny O'Brien, a spokesman for the EFF, an organisation that defends "digital rights", believes the technology could be used by authoritarian regimes, such as the Chinese, to repress dissent.

"If you widen this out to authoritarian regimes, this becomes a far more pernicious threat," he told The Register.

"If you're running off some leaflets that the Chinese government doesn't like the look of, the fact that they can trace you to a particular suburb or printer shop is a far more damaging result."

You don't know what's going on any more :o .

But is it really true?

Yes.

As to the Chinese finding which machine out of the thousands produced and sold, I'm not so sure, once these things hit the 2nd hand market.

As usual it will be the honest users that remain traceable - who likely have nothing to fear.

How does the mechanism work? How do you find out if your printer is infected?

The counterfeitting works systems definately exists -

If you look carefully at paper money you can see a scattering of light yellow dots.
If you place the note on a modern photo copier it scans for these patterns and shuts down.

so its not a great leap in technology / software to imprint a code on domestic printers.

The imperfections on imaging and fuser drums have been used forensically for some time. Though they cannot be used to locate a printer they can confirm what machine was used. This just appears to be an extension of the same idea.

It would not surprise me if cd/dvd burner writes something similar to any disks they produce.

As always it is not the technology but who uses it and to what purpose that is the problem.

I was about th buy a printer, I think I'll have to ask them.

From what I've read, I am guessing that this is done using toner, and therefore is in the printers firmware (or driver on the computer if they are cheap)?

Right!.......

Let's add this up then.

In this: "Free" Country of ours, they know what you buy, and where you go, and when (via your use of: Loyalty, Credit, & Bank cards).
They know What you watch on TV (via cable and satellite services) info gathering.
They know Where you go and what you say by your phone, mobile phone, and the "Tinty web" sites like this.
They know your interests, perversions and general habits via your internet servers usage.
They know where you park your car, drive, (and how fast) by the use of cameras.
They know whether your car is taxed, MOT'd, insured, and your licence is in order or not by the press of a few keys.
They know what Countries you have visited , when, and how frequently.
They know your Employ, your income, and your Tax details.
Even your Local Council sells your information for money unless you tick the box to say: "No"...

.....and now this! (Now, where's me Biro?)......... :)

Hope that you're all so glad that you live in a "Free" country?...........and not one of those Sneeky lefty type ones......
