The LEZ Low Emission Zone kicked in with little fanfare on Feb 4.

Autocar fears this can become the world's largest toll tax zone - hitting hauliers and distance commuters or those who need to merely "pass through" The LEZ is targetting lorries and COACHES.

Ken.. COACHES are a form of PUBLIC Transport if run by National Express. Others admittedly are transporting your MUCH NEEDED TOURISTS!

Talk about cutting off his nose to spite his face.

By end 2008 all vehicles of 3.5 tonnes and some 4x4 of 1.2 tonnes will be included in this extra charge. It could eventually cost as much as £200 for a lorry, coach or 4x4 or even a modest 3L Mondeo to enter this outer zone. EACH DAY! :banghead:

I do not think we could afford to travel to London via National Express then  as this would be even dearer than first class travel on the train even.

TfL admit that the LEZ will run initially at a loss .. because cams cost cash. £10m per year to run. No wonder they want to charge £200 per time then

They reckon that even after a projected £4m in fines within their business plan :? :? - they will be in the red to the tune of £6m.

So why bother?

Because per Autocar

Quote:

This projectis likely to morph into a huge road tolling network as the Tfl Supplemental Toll Provisions Bill will allow TfL to control and toll the network of all major roads within Greater London

In fact Central Government per a consultatiion letter back in 2006 apparently made it clear to TfL that it expects this to happen :banghead:

A huge amount of work has gone into legally defining the LEZ borders and this can be downloaded from the TfL website. Cams will monitor each vehicle entering this zone and all it needs for a pay-as-go spyware for all drivers is apparently just one little tweek to the software programme per the contractor who supplied this equipment to London's Congestion Charge projectinitially and originally

:scratchchin: So taggin and taxin has always been on the agenda then. :banghead:

It's not about "nothing to hide ..nothing to fear" - it's about basic rights to privacy and trust to go about business responsibly and decently - not being "suspected of something all the time" :furious: We appear per another thread to be according more rights to those who do have "something to hide and fear" than those who are normally decent LAW ABIDING guys and gals.

A 5 year contract has been signed with IBM.. who already have provided Stockholm with a tag/beacon charging system - in the city centre only.

Sources say that London will have this by 2009 -using a windscreen mounted card.

(So what happens to visitors then. Folk from abroad on this? :scratchchin:)

So.. London has to power to impose automated billing and toll taxing every road from the outskirts

When Autocar challenged TfL.. they said they had "no immediate plans on this"

But as Hilton Holloway concludes in his piece

Quote:

If Ken Livingstone wins a third term as London's mayor this May, who would bet against such plans suddenly materialising?

coaches use less fuel than trains don't they? Making people use a form of transport that uses more fuel is benefitting the "LOW emmision zone" how precisely? Aside from prohibiting poor people from travelling easily, which is a bit like communist russia?

how may diesel trains come into London. The ones I see don't look like they'd pass a truck MOT never mind TierIII. Try changing the injectors train operators...

Ken knows where he can place his road charging, I don't have to drive in London, or spend my money there. He's made it quite clear I'm not welcome, so I'll stay away.
