Hi all - does anyone know how long it typically takes when re-newing your old paper driving licence? - (I've got the original from 1991 with a few points on it at that time - had a bump shortly after my test) - so if I send this one off, presumably the new one comes back updated properly as a clean licence - so I'm just wondering how long this takes and how much it costs, any forms to get etc.

I think you'll find you will need to apply for a photocard licence, it's not just a case of sending your existing licence up to the DVLA.

I can't see the reason behind taking the points of the paper ones.

I got a photo licence when I passed my bike test. Its a pain. You now have two to carry around. The photo card and the paper extension sheet. Its just stupid.

Unless you need to update your licence because of change of address or whatever, or it shows a drink-driving conviction, I wouldn't bother changing it.

Your photocard IS your licence. Thepaper bit is a record. I think you'll find you only need to show a BiB your plastic one. If you showed him the paper one and it had points on, it might make him biased toward you.
I'm ready to stand corrected.

It is correct, that you only need the ID card to carry with you, and that is not compulsary.The only time i have needed the paper is for Insurance.


Their is no requirment to carry any part of your license. I have even hired vehicles in the UK and abroad, just with the photocard.


It does not take long for the licence to come back, and when you have a Photocard license, it makes replacement even easier. As you only need to make a phone call stating you have lost BOTH PARTS, pay the £17.00 fee, and a replacement is sent to you within a couple of days.

Do I actually need to have the photocard? I lost mine about 4 or 5 days after I got it, and never bothered to get it replaced.

Wrong.....some rental car companies don't accept the plastic card only. I made that mistake

It says quite clearly that the licence consists of BOTH parts.

Provided there's nothing wrong with your application, details on the DVLA database, or other factors that may result in the licence taking a considerable length of time to be issued...

Last year I applied for a photo licence after losing my paper licence. Paid the extra to the Post Office for them to do the ID check at the counter so as to avoid having to send off my passport to the DVLA and speed things up a little. Couple of weeks later a letter arrived from the DVLA - yay, my new licence is here! If only. Instead of a licence, 'twas a letter asking for my passport, along with a questionnaire regarding my identity (place of birth, home addresses etc.). Fill that in, send it and passport back to DVLA and wait. Another week or so passes and another letter arrives, this time asking if I had my original birth certificate. I don't, neither do my parents who couldn't recall where the original was or why we now only had a re-issued copy of the certificate. I replied to this letter, and waited. And waited. And waited. And then got tired of waiting, phoned the DVLA and spoke to the person who'd been sending me the letters. Turned out that someone else had just applied for a licence, using MY original birth certificate as their ID, and when my application arrived it kicked off an investigation into which one of us was genuine. In the end, it took the best part of 3 months before my new licence arrived.

So whilst I have no doubt that in most cases licence applications are dealt with pretty quickly, if you NEED your new licence sooner rather than later then get your paperwork to the DVLA as soon as possible, just in case there are any unforseen problems that end up delaying the application.

Slightly off topic, I went to the post office to arrange to have my mail forwarded to my new address, two pieces of ID required.
I used my switch card as one, and my photo driving licence as the other.
Not good enough, they had to see the paper bit as well, on asking why, I was told is was policy, yet the paper bit only really shows how many points you have and whats that got to do with the PO?
So, for your info, the PO NEED to see the paper bit as well as the photocard, yet the Police don't unless you are given a producer.

That is an extreme case, and should we not be applauding the DVLA, for being vigilant, on this occasion, i can understand your frustration, but undoubtedly this resulted in an unlicesed driver being removed from the road.

When you have a Photo license, their is no need to re-apply with all the form filling

If you ever get a producer, you will have a problem.

If you give them a call, you can pay £17.00 i think, and order your replacement over the phone, no need to fill in any forms.

AS LONG AS YOU HAVE LOST PARTS, which when they ask the question you have

If you have only lost 1 part of your license, you need to apply in writing, using the application form, go figure

Which have no bearing, when you drive abroad, which is maybe why i have not been asked for it.

I agree, You pay by having Points put On your Licence In the first place,then You have To PAY To have them taken off. You would have thought when any points have expired they would be taken off any way. I think It Is £19.00 to have expired points wiped off.

Or, as in my case, I can get it done every five years for free, when I have to renew my HGV Licence.
The only money paid out then, is to the Doctor for the medical.

Parts 1 & 2

Mine consists of parts 1 - 5 ,cos the stone broke when i dropped it. Seriously - how much damage is it advisible to have on the paper before BIB says it is too damaged to use?

I dunno. Mine had been through the washing machine a couple of times and had to have the points hand written on it because it was in such a state. That was 15 years ago though.
