I have to laugh when I hear someone calls themselves middle class.

This is a title invented for the purpose of creating a sense of superiority over others. It has become so daft that there is now an upper and lower middle class so that you claim superiority over your middle class neighbours.

As far as I am concerned if you HAVE to try and class yourself at all you have some kind of identity problem.

I have already discovered a good deal about the class and choices of some posters on this board, but maybe some tighter focus would help you.
I am interested in class indicators in consumer/lifestyle choices.

Questions.

Why have I never seen a chav/chavette driving a 2CV?

Why do middle class drivers rarely visibly modify their cars?

How do we define 'mondeo man'?

What demographic group typically drives japanese sports saloons?

What demographic group drives motorcycle three wheelers?

Why are BMW saloons the new Jaguar MK1 saloon?

What do fluffy dice tell us about a driver?

Why do I drive a Saab?

Not in my case. I've never been called anything but middle class, so that's what I say I am if asked. Unless someone else brings it up however, I genuinely couldn't care less, and I certainly don't use it to "create a sense of superiority". I never think about it at all unless someone else mentions it. I don't even particularly understand it.

Perhaps I'm in the minority. But please don't tar all people who, when asked, call themselves middle class with the same brush. Those who use the class system see me as middle class, so when others who use that same system ask me what I am, I simply repeat what I've been told. It seems more polite to do that than to say "F**k off, I'm not telling you".

Off-topic I know, but I couldn't pass this one up....


Along with other things that hang from the rear-view mirror, they almost always tell us that the person driving is a really crap driver who doesn't appreciate what a distraction the dice are, drives far too slowly everywhere, pulls out in front of people (having inched out for 2 minutes), brakes constantly for no reason, blames someone else on the frequent occasions that they're surprised by something (i.e. they've failed to observe the "something"), doesn't indicate, hates being overtaken, hogs the middle lane, drives a shed with at least one headlight bulb out, and strongly supports speed cameras.

"Mascots" hanging from the rear-view mirror are one of the tell-tale signs for me of someone who needs to be given a very wide berth, and will make a constant series of basic mistakes, so if you do have the misfortune of being behind them then you have to keep a very close eye on them and try to work out what stupid thing they're going to do next. As ever though, there are exceptions to every rule (and if you're in possession of such a mascot then I'm sure you're one of them! )

That's fine! I like nodding dogs as well. No, it's just the ones that hang down and move around alarmingly which I don't like. And I honestly do see a lot of people with them driving atrociously. It's nothing to do with class or anything like that. If aristocrats did it (or their chauffeurs!) I'd say exactly the same.

Exactly the same is true of the shaven head and tattoo brigade, of course.

By any demographic classification I would count as middle class - I'm a graduate, a qualified professional, a reader of broadsheet newspapers with probably over a thousand books in his house, many of which have no pictures in them.

But I don't really do anything with the express intention of impressing others, and always feel a bit of a nonconformist in any organisation.

I don't turn up my nose at eating at McDonalds, drinking Coke or a pint of bitter in the local pub, and have even been known to buy stuff from Home Bargains

I also can't stand red wine, the love of which seems to be a bit of a badge of middle classness

Nothing wrong with red wine per se - some's filthy stuff, some's absolute nectar. In my experience, bad red wine is rather less vile than bad white wine. But it's all a matter of personal taste, rather than class.

But for everyday drinking, I don't think you can beat a pint of Rich's cider.
