Was it forward facing or rear facing. If rear was it one flash or two.

If it was one flash from a rear camera you are probably in the clear. If not....

fast fox, what sort of road were you on? If the scamera is sited where hardly anyone speeds they might leave it empty for months at a time. But if it's a honey trap site, say a nice wide, straight road with no entrances or side turnings and a daft limit, they'll probably have a camera unit in there most of the time. There's always the chance it's run out of film though. Keep your fingers crossed for a fortnight, and meantime have a look at http://www.pepipoo.com if you want legal info.

btw, been looking at the Staffs police website to see if there's anything there that can help. Crafty sods tell you they've got 240 fixed camera sites but aren't giving anything away about how many actual cameras are in the boxes. Not surprised really, but worth a try.

Some times things need to be dealt with, before you get home

The only way you will actually know, is when you receive the nip.

Ta guys. It was on a stretch with boat loads of other cams that have recently been installed. it was rear facing and hiding behind a sign saying 30mph dropping from 60mph and on a blind bend... Ive allready had three points this year for driving safely to work. The last time i got caught i had to smile `cos someone had done the cam out with a shot gun a few days latter.

Wouldn't fancy my chances of getting away with it then :( , though I've heard they're supposed to be on straight sections so maybe if it's right on the bend... ?

Incidentally, when I went to look at Staffs plod site in all the stuff about :P safety :P cameras and road safety there wasn't one mention of the traffic division. Made me wonder if they actually still have one.

Just on the subject of speed cameras etc, does anyone know what those small blacked out lenses are on top of many traffic lights - are they speed cameras or what?

Don't think so. The lights on the pelican crossing outside my school had them c.1981, well before the scamera days. I've seen them lots of places since then, both on crossings and at junctions. If they were speed cameras I think there'd be a lot more banned 12 pointers about. I think they're some sort of sensor to detect traffic coming up the road and determine when to change the lights.

I seem to remeber a rumour about 1 in 6 cameras having film in, but probably just speculation. My singular incident with a speed camera was a rear facing one that double flashed but i got lucky on that one. Hope you get the same.

The little black boxes i believe are sensors to detect the presence of traffic, to let people through if theres no one on any other entry to the junction.

Could you explain the three points for 'driving safely'???

Thanks.

What's to explain? Surely you're not suggesting that exceeding the speed limit is automatically dangerous?

Try this.

Find a stretch of (well lit) road where 30mph is a sensible safe maximum speed during busy daytime conditions.

What's the maximum safe speed on the same stretch of road likely to be during deserted night time conditions? (Obviously I don't expect a numerical answer)

I was only after clarification of what sort of cam it was, speed, red light etc????? I am not making any comments on speed limits and safety.

Is that safe speed at night by car, motorbike, bicycle or bus/lorry??

Well the fine you get now will help to pay for that damage.

The maximum safe speed on all roads is zero, by definition. What answer did you expect? Perhaps you should have asked "what's the maximum safe enough speed", so that we could have a debate about what "enough" means!

I'm not about to embark on this daft and bankrupt semantic argument, and not least because "safe" is normally a useful relative term not an absurd way to express "zero risk".

Then your question is void of meaning until you can find a way to express 'safe enough'. Safe enough for society as a whole is 'within the speed limit', among many other things.

No, the speed limit has very little to do (except in a very broad-brush sense) with whether a particular speed is "safe" or not. If you change a speed limit it makes no difference to the relative safety of particular speeds.

And the generally recognised meaning of "safe" is "safe within acceptable parameters" rather than "guaranteed totally devoid of risk."

Zero is not a totally safe speed, by the way, because a meteorite might fall on you - you just never know.

I think your logical and analytical skills are far better than this and I conclude that you are a wind up merchant.
