Spotted some distance - 50 yards? - beyond a gatso on the A303 (Winterbourne Stoke) in a 40 limit. Anyone seen one before? Box on top light grey, approx 30cm square in area, one clear and one red lens, pointing at where the gatso was pointing, but front facing - obviously I got a neighbour's child to draw this from my description....

It looks like the head of No5 from the film Short Circuit

In other words, I have no idea.

Looking at the picture I found here the left-hand window seems to have a "windscreen wiper", and I can just make out what appears to be a camera lens. Could it be a CCTV camera monitoring the gatso?

Well done mihangel, that is indeed what I saw. You appear to have used the power of "not being lazy" to find a picture on the internet, whereas I painstakingly drew.. sorry, got a neighbour's child to draw a picture of it.

Still no idea what it is though!!!

Probably another camera to take a photo of the front of the vehicle at the same time as the one to the rear is taken.

Take an ordinary camera to it, flash at it and see if it flashes back. If so, it's a flash linked front photography device. Also you just had your photo taken. ;)

Whatever it is, its probable purpose is to extract money from you.

My best guess is CCTV with an IR lamp to "protect" the gatso.

Someone fire a very bright flash at it and see if it takes your photo. Go on. :)

The Secret Policeman on Grumpy Old Sod confirms that these are ANPR cameras.

About 6 posts down. There is some other comment about ANPR in there.

Having past this camera again the other day, there is indeed (as in the images linked to on this thread) a third device with what looks like a single flash lens on it, facing the same way as the gatso, while the original thing I... sorry, my neighbours child drew is facing the gatso.

The devices in my post have "Gatso" on label on rear .They have one white opaque lens. The aerial points to these being ANPR .Daughter has spotted unmarked cars hidden close by one and some pulls by unmarkeds close to these ,consistent with reply to me by our local camera merchants that they ( the cams) could be transmitting data to the police .What is interesting is that although the nearby Gatso s are Hi viz ,these are plain grey .

Just out of interest, both poles have now been removed.

The camera is of course out of use, being in Wiltshire. :)
