Just a quick question - am I right to assume that if someone gets their tax reminder correctly then the DVLA have the correct details for the Registered Keeper of a vehicle?

I would assume so, but remember, they don't have to get them right everytime.

I know of a case where the DVLA issued a tax disc, with the correct registration number, after purchase from a dealership, then when the tax was due for renewal sent the reminder to the previous owner - who was still listed as the registered keeper, along with the new owner!
Thing was, the car had previously had a cherished plate, which the previous owner had transfered to his NEW car - and he received reminders for TWO cars, with the same cherished number!!
The new owner had a tax disc with the OLD number (which had been replaced with a cherished plate) and was unable to tax the vehicle when it became due, because despite issuing a disc, DVLA had failed to record the details on their database.

DVLA swear that their computer cannot accept two vehicles with the same reg. number, yet had two vehicles both with the same cherished number, AND issued a tax disc without recording the details.

ANYTHING is possible with the DVLA!!

You can ask the DVLA what information they hold about you and your vehicle (if it is your vehicle or if you have "good" grounds for wanting to know):

The reason i want to know is that i am waiting for a speeding ticket but was driving my mum's car. She moved house at the same time as buying the car and can't remember if it is registered to her new address or not but she has just received her car tax reminder to her new address for this particular car so I'm wondering if the car tax can be sent to the correct address that dvla has the correct details in order to give to the police because if it comes to it and the nip is late, I don't want them using the excuse that the registered keepers details were wrong.

If they got the REMINDER to the right address, then the NIP should arrive there too.

If it does not, then you should have the advantage.

Great, I'll be disputing the speeding offence anyway when it arrives but if it's late which it will be now as no post can be delivered on Monday due to it being a Bank Holiday then all the better for my defence.

I assume it never arrived but....

They have 14 days to post the NIP, though most get them out a good bit quicker than that.

If it isn't your car then the nip will go to the registered keeper.
The keeper will fill it in.
Probably with your name as the driver at the time of the offence.
You'll then get one of your own.
