Hello to all who reads this i am a new member registered today although i have popped in for a read on the forums in the past
and i enjoy the site.

i live in central scotland and have a bit of a grumble about the cameravans and where they seem to operate up here i agree that they can be usefull for catching motorists who do more than a whisker over the limit but they could also be used for drivers using mobile phones etc, also i have only ever seen the vans operate on the flyovers over motorways which are probably the safest roads we have and never outside the many busy schools in my area where they perhaps could be better put to use.

sorry about the moaning!

I don't see how sending someone a letter several days after the incident is at all useful in modifying any behaviour.

If they are doing something dangerous then surely the only way to deal with it is to stop them there and then and point out their error?

...especially outside of schools.

You can just imagine the letter to a bereaved parent from an apologetic camera partnership manager.
Quote:
Dear Mrs Jones,
we were sorry to hear of your little Johnny's sad death on Friday, when he was run down by a speeding driver outside his school.
Apparently the driver was drunk too, so will be sure to receive a few more weeks on his eventual sentence and maybe a higher fine.
There is some good news however - we believe the same vehicle was seen speeding past the school on Tuesday, and by coincidence we had sent a FPO in the post the same day as little Johnny was run down to the registered keeper - who may or may not have been the driver responsible.

The additional £60 fine will be sent to the treasury with all the rest, and in the light of Johnny's demise, you might stand a good chance of getting a fixed camera outside the school! You should contact your MP and local council ASAP, and request a lower speed limit too. Johnny's demise should help garner much public support from friends and other parents.

Whilst these sort of letters don't go out, I can see that there does appear to be almost that thought process going on, look how emotive some of the 'speed kills' ads are getting.

Never mind fact when we can tug on peoples heart strings to achieve or misguided aims...

You will find that the tools are being misused by a so-called 'road safety policy' which seeks to profit from more and more drivers on the road with ever greater frequency and severity ...

as opposed to what we believe in:
a road safety policy based on enhancing awareness, responsibility, and cooperation among and for the benefit of all road users.

5) The rest, including laws of the land, is thoughtful observation, prescience, etiquette, decorum, and cooperation

Great to see you posting :)

So what are you saying - that you don't like cameras, (quote tefal1 .... bit of a grumble ....)
but, is it that you see them (perhaps) as a necessary 'evil'?
or, that you like them but grumble ? (quote tefal1 ... I agree they can be useful ....) with whom are you agreeing with ?

Sorry but after re-reading your post, on the face of it you appear to approve of them, but also grumble ?
Is this perhaps you brain instinctively telling you that they do not appear to be working?
As people slow then speed up again, yet the 'fines' are mostly for a few mph over the set speed limit, which in reality are pretty arbatory anyway ? So 'things' seem 'wrong' ? So may I ask you first what you do, and do not, like about them ?
