Funny stuff, red tarmac. It's started appearing up and down a local road over the entrances to side roads, and even some of the drain covers. One 3'x3' square of it doesn't seem to relate to anything as far as I could see, though it was quite near a sign on the verge. What do you reckon, fulfilling a safety need or using up some of the local councils budget surplus?

It could be anti-skid surfacing, although that it is normally beige. It would make sense painting the drain covers because they are often slippery to cyclists/motorcyclists but making them red is a bit silly, they are more likely to swerve and avoid them, causing more trouble!

It does look like anti-skid surface, but as it's only a couple of feet thick across the side road entrances it's not going to do anything for skidding. It almost looks like some kind of patronising "look, this is a side road, traffic might come out of it" crap, but I can't believe even the local authority would seriously believe that's necessary.

Are they perhaps planning to make the side roads a 20 mph zone with the red tarmac helping define the boundaries?

Maybe, though almost all are cul-de-sacs and you wouldn't get anyone going much over 20 down a lot of 'em anyhow. They've even put red marks across the entrance to a pub car park. I suspect they're trying it as a visibiltiy aid of some sort, though frankly anyone who didn't notice the pub should have a dog and a white stick.

The drive from mu house is made of red tarmac. I don't like it. Over the years, the oil stains from my jallopies have made it all spotty!
