Dad packed up farming in july 2005 and sold nearly every thing except 1 old tractor, his chain saw and diesel tank. Things have been going missing. The little lights from around the house went in 2 hits. The chain saw went a month or 2 ago, all the best logs have gone off his wood pile and last week he noticed the lock on his diesel tank was damaged, then noticed the juice was gone.

So he rang the West Mercia Police (again) and they said that they had a vehicle in mind, a white Transit (suprise, suprise) and that they had part of the number plate and that when they had the rest it would soon turn up on ANPR. So...

Can they put the part of the number that they do know and put it against the likely white transits and stop them, or do they need to know the whole number.

Secondly, does diesel that has been sat in a tank outside for over three year burn like it should and will it (fingers crossed) cause a few problems.

I suggested getting a little bit more and lacing it with water and sugar.

The sugar will not dissolve in the diesel.
The water will settle to the bottom of the tank, where the sugar will dissolve in the water !
It will clog-up the filters in anything it is used in, but will be useable by just letting the contaminants settle and taking fuel from the top.
Try adding 20% petrol instead, that'll make things go with a bang.

Sorry mate, ANPR will need a full registration (VRM) as it wil lsearch exact matches against the PNC. Partial results are not confirmed and will not read, and as PNC fast track which responds to ANPR queries only replies with positive results (it dos nto show details of all VRMs passing, only those of a specific interest) it will not alert officers to your friendly local transit van......however.....what is wrong with inputting all VRMs of similar and suspicious vehicles linked on local police intelligence databases "worth a stop check, MAY be involved in scrap and diesel theft from farms"........Good luck with tracking them down!

As this was a farm tank, would it not be red diesel? Simple to find with a dip-test round any of the Pikey-camps in your area.
I like the idea of a couple of gallons of petrol in the remaining fuel - you could also add a couple of pounds of ammonium nitrate fertiliser to the tank; this makes a very inefficient explosive called ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil), but they would be picking bits of cylinder head out of their arses for months to come!

I haven't seen a pikey van at a filling station for months, and we've got dozens around here.
Dipping their tanks and NOT finding one with red diesel in would mean you've found a genuine fuel thief.
A recent stop-and-check down London found that one in six "white vans" was running on red......

Petrol in diesel will only upset modern techicrap cars.

Old "White vans" will be able to burn petrol/diesel mixes with impunity (With mine, the owners handbook actually sugests running up a 30% petrol mix in extreem cold weather to avoid waxing)

Now a couple of gallons of old sump oil is a diferent matter! they will still run OK but will smoke badly presenting a "Here I am" scenario.

And if you used the ammonium nitrate option, you'd probably end up with some kind of terrorism charge and 48 days in the nick.

It's been a while since I actually saw diesel, could you just fill the tank with water and red food colouring so that it looks like diesel, hopefully it'll still smell enough like diesel (thanks to the tank) to fool them into taking a tankful.

seemingly they have a tank in the van with a pump. They follow delivery vehicles and make their move when they know they have something to steal, though dads not had a delivery since 2005.

I'm supposed to be getting a new tractor at work soon and mentioned to the boss about looking fuel caps, this machine will hold over 250 litres. Boss said what is the point when they will just damage the tank if it is locked.
