Hi...just found this excellent forum.
Apologies if this first post is a little off-topic but couldn't see where else to include it on the site.
I've finally decided to get a Sat Nav unit but can't find any which have fixed + mobile alerts.
Anyone recommend/know of any?
I understand RAC Sat Nav models have fixed camera alerts for life of product but not mobile alerts.
What I'm trying to avoid is having to buy a Sat Nav AND a dedicated speed-camera detector.
Like most of you, I expect, I've enough bloody things in the car as it is!
Re: driving safely, Sat Navs at least have a useful function, but apart from legitimate places like schools and demonstrable blackspots, even a blind man can see this plague of 'safety' cameras has precious little to do with safety and everything to do with revenue-gathering/thieving.
Damn these scameras for forcing an Advanced Motorist with zero blemishes on a 30-odd year driving licence to try and beat them at their own evil game before they eventually nab even him!
Why have we all allowed this pernicious surveillance society to dominate us without a fight? :x

Pocketgpsworld.com has a database that is updated by the users. It is about £20 a year for almost any satnav. In comparisons with others it fairs very well. It does mobile, fixed, specs, temp and redlight cams. It is regularly updated 2 or 3 times a month.

If you are the first to log a fixed camera position you get a free lifetime membership to the database.

I use it

My TomTom has both fixed, mobile and traffic light cam alerts.
Most have.
You may not have the file loaded or:
Maybe they're not enabled ?
Oh, and the pgps site is a pay-for-the-file site, via paid membership.
Downloading the files via peer-to-peer sites will get you deliberately corrupted files.

Just bought a Garmin Nuvi 250 to replace the last sat nag that the missus had stolen at knifepoint while waiting at lights (Hants police were too busy to attend, but that is another story).

It came with free updates for 1 year, includes fixed, mobile & traffic light cams (although if you jump a red light then you deserve to get nicked IMO) and cost £88 brand new.

It's a "no frills" unit, but apparently got very good write up's in the budget range.

Road Angel Navigator and the Pogo GPS are the main ones. They're based on the Road Angel and the Origin B2 respectively and share the same databases.

They're much better than the 3rd party camera databases you can get off the internet for TomTom and friends in my experience, of course this is reflected in the subscription fees.
