I'm at a loss for words here, on Wednesday afternoon I was behind a 58 plate Merc C220 which itself was behind a police Astra at about 1 1/2 car lengths which may well be fine in the 30 limit (I tend to judge it more on feel, and it's certainly not fine in my current, much less capable, non-ABS car), it then turned into a 60 limit and the distance between them changed. The police car accelerated up to 50, no change, then 60, no change, down to 50 (at the start of the 40 limit), no change, down to 40 (for the camera in the 40 limit) and back up to 50 with this Merc sat right on his arse.

I don't understand it, I can understand why people tailgate if they're impatient and want to get past but this guy was making no attempt to do so and clearly thought that this distance was an acceptable following distance in a 60 limit. (since if you're going to knowingly drive like a nob, do it when there aren't any police around!) Either that or this is Merc's new auto braking/following system in action.

And to add insult to injury eventually the police car just turned off at a roundabout after 15 minutes of being tailgated, rather than doing anything about it.

I bet In Gear would've done something ;)

Let's hope that it's just because you didn't notice the tow rope Lum. :)
Indeed it would be a great shame if even Police Officers have swallowed the "Everythings OK except speeding" dogma.

I've seen a car turn into a road through no-entry signs, pass between me and a marked squad car waiting at the lights, and drive off the wrong way down the one-way road. No reaction at all from the bib, although they were pointed in the direction of the local nick so maybe it was knocking off time.

I strongly doubt it was a tow rope. In many cases the police car's brake lights came on first, plus I would've seen it when they made a right turn.
