What sort of speed were you doing at the time? As has been said, the cameras have always been enabled when the VSL is off, but set to a threshold of 93 mph -- if you were doing less than this and got flashed, it's a disturbing development. Do let us know what happens.

Hmmmm ..... according to my GPS I was doing in excess of a ton, so I can't really complain about getting my come uppence, however I'm sure that I have driven through that section of the M25 at least as fast before and not been flashed.

Sorry I can't be of assistance with the 80 limit.

can someone please confirm for me.

A friend was traveling clockwise between J12 and J15 last night and was flashed twice by a camara his speed he is unsure of BUT wasnt slow.

Is this likely to have been a new digital camara? Is it likey he is going to get a brown envelope on his door mat over the next week or two?

From a previous post is it true there is only one camara in each direction?

What is for sure is that Highways Agency told me that switch the to digital (expected completeion in summer) will mean cameras between every junction (j12-J16). If there is only one presently, that means 3 new camera locations.

Sorry to drag this up again, but I've been reading that the grace period from NSL to a fixed limit is anything from 1 to 5 mins. However today I was travelling anti-clockwise past the last gantry before the A3 turnoff, about 200m before getting to the gantry the matrix sign flashed up 50, I took my foot off the accelerator and was about 100m from it when it suddenly flashed 40 (was doing about 55 at this point). As I passed under I looked in my wing mirror and noticed that the camera flashed twice as a white transit was passing under.

Now I assume it was flashing for the transit, but I don't know if it flashed for me, it was no more than 10 secs for the 50 coming up and probably more like 5 or so secs before I reached the gantry that the 40 came up. Under the a grace period I'd assume that the cameras wouldn't even flash, but it either means they do, or there is no grace period (which could introduce lots of heavy braking and possible accidents?).

If this is what they're up to, then it's dangerous to be playing with traffic.

The grace period is 10 seconds (official regulations - "(b) apart from this paragraph, the vehicle would be subject to a speed limit by virtue of this regulation, but would not have been subject to a speed limit by virtue of this regulation had it passed that location ten seconds earlier than was in fact the case")

In your case what might have happened was that you and the white van passed under the gantry when it was showing 40 but still enforcing 50, so if the white van was doing 60 he might have been prosecuted for "60 in a 50", but as it was less than 10 seconds since the 40 came on, nobody should have been flashed for that.

Did this ever happen in the end? Or is there still just the one camera in each direction betwen the M4 and M40?

Occasionally I drive at speeds above the speed limit but normally I drive at 70 in a 70 limit and so on. I fail to see the point of all this discussion because I agree with the need and reason for speed limits and usually abide by them. Sometimes if I am driving in the middle of the night or the road is empty I will drive a bit faster and run the risk of getting caught. That is a risk that I take knowing the consequences.

What is all the fuss about?

Now if you feel that you have a right to exceed the speed limit then lobby your MP!

Unfortunately, the reasoning behind the level at which a lot of limits are set is far from clear. People respect limits set sensibly (generally by using the 85th percentile method) but unecessarily low limits bring them into disrepute.
