I came across this while clicking through the BBC news website this morning.

Quote:
Serious safety concerns about new road surfaces being laid across the UK have been uncovered in a BBC investigation.

....

"It was a sunny day in August. I jumped on the brakes and the car just kept going and going.

....

skid resistance tests were conducted in the wet and on surfaces that were worn down, but that tests in dry conditions were overlooked.

Quite scary stuff. It seems that some of our roads may have less grip in the dry than in the wet. Exactly the opposite to what most drivers will be expecting.

How many accidents on these surfaces have been put down to drivers travelling too fast?

A section of the A67 has been recently resurfaced - lovely and smooth compared with previously. And yet signs warning of a slippery road surface have been erected with the legend" New Road Suface". Apart from the lack of grip in the wet from all the white lines, it's much better now.
