five of the top 6 cars with the lowest bodily injury liability are convertibles!

http://www.iihs.org/research/hldi/compo ... 007&cv=bod

which just goes to show, it's not what you drive but how you drive. the best drivers drive convertible corvettes!

The "worst property damage liability" is a little more predictable, with hummer variants taking the 1st, 2nd and 4th top places

Well I suppose the less metal cage that there is, the less chance of additional damage to the occupant - unless they were all thrown clear of course ! Most interesting ...

Are these tables adjusted to reflect the fact that small four-door sedans outnumber convertibles by at least 10:1?

I'd be REALLY wary of tables like that! You could probably put together a good case for saying that you were more likely to get killed in a navy blue Mondeo (or whatever the most popular car is) than a TVR using the "right" sort of statistical analysis!

yes, the tables were first posted to another forum by someone wishing to show how a pious was "safer" than a s-class, I posted this:

http://www.iihs.org/research/hldi/compo ... 2007&cls=4

which show how 'vette, mustang, 911 and 350z rag tops are all "safer places" to be than their tin top counterparts.

Of course thats rubbish, they're better insurance risks, which is dependent of the average driver of a class of car. Although you can't cherry pick the bits that support your pre-selected ideal (where have we seen that before?), it shows that patterns emerge that go beyond simplistic assumptions ie more car=safer.

Seems to be, since this is a US site yet the highest liability for "Colission" is the Lotus Elise, which beats much more likely candidates such as the BMW M5 and Subaru Impreza WRX.

I am willing to bet that the safest car by accident frequency is a Bugatti Veyron?

All I need now is a million quid and I can be in the safest car on the road!

Just as before the Challenger incident it used to be said that the safest form of transport was a NASA space-craft 8-)
