I was checking my pet petition (up to nearly 20,000 now) and also checking the Roadpeace one was still on 2 :D , and had a quick glance at some of the other real failures in the transport category.

My eye was caught by:

Quote:
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to put a speed limit on Whitehouse Lane, Wirral.

Recently, there have been more than 10 crashes along Whitehouse Lane, as drivers have been going at a high, dangerous speed along it.

Some of these crashes have been into fields containing horses, which could either be hit by the car or escape onto the main road.

Luckily, there has been no injuries, however, people and horses walk down this road and there is a chance that they may be hit by a car.

I propose that we introduce a speed limit of 30mph for the whole road and speed bumps for just before the turns, where the most accidents occur.

2 signatures. Anyone know this lane?

No is it really a good idea to put speed humps in to the approach to accident-prone corners? Couldn't they potentially destabilise cars' cornering abilities?

Could this be the offending corner on the offending lane? :?

That petition is a gigantic fail.

For one it's not the job of national government to put individual speed limits on roads

Secondly, whoever posted it thinks there is no speed limit on the road at the moment, when there is, it's 60.

Thirdly, if someone is ending up in the field they probably were going much faster than 60 anyway. They were already disregarding the law, what makes him think they'll obey a 30 limit?

It once again, illustrates the stupidity of the "speed kills" brigade who think that the answer to ALL traffic problems is to reduce speed limits and put obstacles in the road. If only they put some mileage under their belts they might actually learn something about road safety.

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

If there is 10 crashes along that road surely then the road needs to be re-engineered. Drivers will drive as fast as they feel safe to regardless of the limit. Still I say put the limit to 30 and enforce it with a speed camera. It works on every other road so why not here? In fact how about we just get people to Flintstone their car along!
