Hi,

I'm sure that this is a frequent question, so thanks and sorry in advance:

Driving into Cardiff centre this morning, 3 lane road with left-hand two lanes inbound. The centre lane can be inbound or outbound deponding on time of day. Gatso camera on outbound side of road and "camera lines" in centre lane and outbound lane.

I was in the left hand (of the two at that time of day) inbound lane, so Gatso was facing me and I was not driving over the "camera lines".

I'm pretty certain that it was me that triggered the camera. Yeah, I know................

Given that the Gatso was facing me (two lanes over to my right) and that I wasn't driving over the "camera lines", am I still at risk of a NIP?

If it's a gatso and not another type of camera you ought to be okay. They take pictures of the back of the car, so it would have been someone else setting it off. I've heard some people say that empty ones can be set to flash in both directions, and if so that might also explain it if you know you were being a bit naughty.

Definitely a rear-facing Gatso camera which flashed as I approached it on the otherside of the road. Definitely no lines on the road in the lane I was in, which is possibly why I was less careful than I should have been (that and the fact that I'd already passed the zebra crossing which it "guards")

I`m not aware of any forward facing camaras in the Cardiff area, what road was this?

It is a bog-standard, normal Gatso. If you know Cardiff, it's the one on North Road, between Colum Road and Corbett Road and is aimed at slowing northbound traffic before a zebra-crossing, Ambulance Station entrance/exit and the Colum Road lights.

I was travelling southbound and was just a bit concerned because I'm sure that I triggered it by going to fast as I went in the other direction and it might not take too much for the local SCP to extrapolate the two sets of road markings covered by the camera across to the third lane and try it on.

I should like to point out that mine was the only vehicle on the straight stretch of road in either direction and there were no pedestrians in sight at the time either. In my view I was driving safely and within the distance that I could see to be clear on my side of the road.

Done the same myself in Canterbury. Never got an NIP. I was worried at the time though.
