Pc jailed over girl's crash death
Schoolgirl Hayley Adamson was killed instantly
A police officer has been jailed for causing the death of a 16-year-old schoolgirl by dangerous driving.
Pc John Dougal, 41, accelerated to 94mph (151km/h) in a 30mph zone before he hit Hayley Adamson in Newcastle's Denton Road on 19 May last year.
He was jailed for three years on Friday after earlier being convicted at Newcastle Crown Court.
Dougal was chasing a suspect car at the time, but did not have his siren or blue lights switched on.
During his trial it emerged Dougal was reacting to the automatic number plate recognition system of his Volvo patrol car, which alerted him to a passing Renault Megane.
But the device was incorrect and the Megane was being lawfully driven.
Wildy has already commented on this above. How far can we trust ANPR and what lessons can the police learn .. given that they will have to check these pings but are at the mercy of crap updating?
Off topic remark . if they cannot get these details correct . .and these details only include registered motor cars .. then can we afford to trust ID cards?

'Totally avoidable'
Dougal accelerated to catch it up and struck Miss Adamson, of Cedar Road, Fenham, when she stepped into the road.
It was estimated that the Volvo had slowed to about 70mph when it hit the teenager.
She had been drinking alcohol, which may have affected her decision-making, but the court heard that it was difficult to judge traffic speed, especially at night.
OK .. but she was not drunk .. per the autopsy also put to that court apparently. Yes . I know... but we have kids and we have to deal with a lot of teenage hormonal rebellions/challenges to us. Never easy. You try to steer them to the decent course ... but take your chances /hedge your bets all the same

He had no justification whatsoever to drive at such excessive speed

Dougal told the court during his trial he had not wanted to alert the Megane driver that he was being pursued by putting on his sirens.
The officer, a qualified advanced driver, was travelling so fast he had effectively become a passenger in his own car and had surrendered "to physics", according to a police driving instructor who gave evidence during the trial.
After the trial Gary Garland, the North East Commissioner for the Independent Police Complaints Commission, said the tragedy "should have been totally avoidable".
Pc John Dougal said he thought about Miss Adamson every day
He said: "Pc John Dougal is a highly trained police driver, yet he chose to take totally unnecessary and unacceptable risks and travel at high speed on a residential road.
"He had no justification whatsoever to drive at such excessive speed.
"Being a highly trained police driver should never be used as licence to take unnecessary risks on public roads."
Judge Hodson also banned Dougal from driving for four years.
He said: "To the grieving family, no sentence can ever be long enough."
He also said Dougal's decision not to use warning lights or sirens was in breach of the Chief Constable's guidance.
Judge Hodson added: "The tragic and inescapable fact is that when Hayley decided to cross the road, you would not have been in her vision.
"It is true you had slowed down but at the point of impact your speed was estimated as being between 68 and 72mph - she was killed instantly."
'Genuinely remorseful'
He said he would have jailed Dougal for four years but took into account mitigating factors.
Lucky? I do not know. I feel for the man and the Adamson family alike. What decent human being could not? I accept he never thought in worst nightmare that this would happen. No one does. No one sets out to do so. But we are only ever as good as the last safe drive/road use so how we travel.

He said: "You have given conspicuous service to Northumbria Police where you have been highly regarded by senior officers and colleagues alike.
"You have now resigned from the police force with all that means for you and your family.
"I appreciate you are genuinely remorseful.
"I have heard you say yourself that you thought of what you had done to Hayley every day. I am convinced that that is genuine."
I think so too. Wildy has issues with his insistence that he considered he was "safe" But she did say on PH that she was sure he would feel the same horror that all innocents caught up in such tragedy do all the same. I agree with her as we are just too aware of what those involved in our own personal black holes felt .. and the lorry driver and the widow of the man who nearly ended Vrenchen's life and mine as I know/enjoy my life with her.. tried . suicide and I thank God that they failed.
I do feel for him and his family just as much as I feel for Hayley and her family. No one would ever knowingly infllict such on another.. especially a police officer who sees so much human nastiness as his day job.
I will not condone all the same... but I worry about the Pavlov dog effect an ANPR alert seems to have on even those trained to a very high level here .. and I am now questioning this apparently programmed reaction.
Maybe Pc Dougal is not quite so much to blame here. Perhaps those training him to respond to ANPR as he did .. are more so?
YES . I am raising a THORNY one here..

But I think right to open up to debate??? YES???

Speaking after the sentencing Miss Adamson's aunt, Heather Kinlock, said justice had been done.
She said: "We now hope that Pc Dougal is aware that not only has he destroyed our family unit, but also our community.
"With this verdict we feel that justice has been done. However, no sentence passed can compensate for our loss.
"Pc Dougal took the law into his own hands that night and left our lives shattered forever."
Yes.. and he shattered his own life... his family.. his career too.
A very terrible tragedy for all. I feel so sorry for each party and can only pray time heals and that Pc Dougal and the Adamsons achieve the same shared bond of mutual forgiveness and even friendship we achieved with those who almost pushed us all down a deep black hole once.
I have other links as mailed to be by my wife earlier today. I will paste up after my evening supper which is now ready as lovingly cooked by my wild wife.. home made tomato soup .. followed by baked fish with baby roasted pototoes . and seasonal veg. YUM and a slice of her "devil choc cake"
I will have my supper.. play with my kids and then perhaps play a bit more on here as I find it somehow "cathartic"to vent spleen on car stuff after a hard day'swork
