Quite right, I regularly drive 300 miles from East Kent to West Wales. Sticking to 70 would typically add 30-45 mins to my journey at least. Just what the doctor ordered when you're trying to avoid tiredness and keep focused.

I find that having a rest is much more refreshing than driving as fast as possible. Back in the bad old days, I used to drive from Munich to north Wales non-stop (apart from the ferry and a petrol/pee stop at Aachen). I found that if you left Munich at 5 am, you could make last orders in the Red Lion at Northop. The last few hours from Dover to Chester was the worst, but the prospect of a pint kept you going.

I personally find driving a little quicker than 70 (80-90) on the motorway is more refreshing than having lots of rest breaks. The drive is more engaging, overtaking is a lot safer, it feels like the natural speed for the road IMO. Breaks add to your journey time far more than driving at slower speeds. Eventually fatigue creeps up regardless of breaks.

Also you would not need to drive at the max speed limit on a motorway with a 90mph speed limit if you didn't want to.

I wonder of you took advantage of the of more liberal and efficient continental motorway speed limits? I would have :D

[quote="Pete317"]I will not have one of those devices in my car. I'd sooner go to jail.

Over on General chat is an article about baning SUV, or rather te idea that a group should decide that a certain group of vehicles should not be allowed on the road - or is it about choice ???????????

The group against SUV and large 4x4 are trying to deny people their rights.
Whats the difference between that and a minority group saying that cars should be fitted with speed limiters.

If you agree with the principle of banning big brother from interfering with your vehicle ( ie fitting and sealing a speed limiter) you must agree with the rights of anyone to buy the vehicle they choose to.
If we take aunty tony's tea party 's ideas to the conclusion( nearly said logical, but when were labour ever logical) then --
Mondays - blue cars are allowed on road
Tuesdays - green ones

etc etc .

I certainly don't drive as fast as possible. I don't use speed to keep me in some kind of adrenalin fuelled state of arousal. I accept that on certain roads and in certain conditions, driving quickly versus settling back into the flow of sedate traffic makes little difference to journey time.
BUT

On a 300 mile journey on modern motorways, there are opportunities to drive faster than the NSL with virtually zero increase in risk. When this is the case I often take that opportunity. This does not mean 'pedal to the floor'. Sticking to 70 mph in these conditions represents a kind of pious motoring fundamentalism and is simply unnecessary however well-meaning.
