Labour has shelved its controversial plans for a national 'pay-as-you-drive' road pricing amid fears it would turn off millions of voters, new Transport Secretary Lord Adonis has confirmed.
Now was 'not the time' to introduce the proposed scheme that would see drivers pay up to £1.50 a mile for the privilege of driving on the road, he said.
Widespread public opposition means it will not be included in the Labour manifesto in the run up to a General Election that must be held within the next 12 months - and will not introduced during the lifetime of the next parliament if Labour is re-elected, he added.
