Can anyone give me more info on specs, I hate speed cameras in general but specs I dont really know much about. I'v only seen them once and it was on the M20 to dover when they had road work, is it true that they only use them when there is road works or do they have them on some motorways permently. Also I know they catch you over the speed limit but do the police use a tolorence for when they fine you.

Other thing is, if you get caught by a speed camera on the motorway, up to what speed do you get a set fine, and what speed over do you get a summons.

And finally I was under the impression that over 100mph on the motorway you automaticly get a ban, someone on another website said this is not true at all.

I'm new on this forum only found it the other day, and what a cool forum it is! :D

They are not used permanently on any motorways, although they have been installed on a small number of primary A-roads such as the A616 Stocksbridge bypass in South Yorkshire.

Experience has shown that permanent installations don't bring in much revenue, as everyone trundles along grimly sticking just below the limit, which probably explains why they are relatively rare.

I would imagine the minimum threshold for prosecution was always set at the limit + 10% + 2mph as set out in the ACPO speed enforcement guidelines

See the ACPO guidelines above.

Obviously you don't if you're the Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester

Above 100 mph, the court is likely to consider a ban, but there are plenty of examples of people caught at over 100 mph not receiving one.

Regards,

Peter

Cheers for the reply. I think the 10% + 2mph is so tight that means on the motorway 79mph. I thought though that upto a certain speed you get fixed penalty of 3 points plus a fine of around £90 without having to go to court. Then above that you have to go to court to find out your destiny!
Is that correct?

I was lucky once driving 90mph on M20 looked in central mirror and the police were behind so pulled over, they just went past, followed them for a while between 80 and 90. Then someone came past atleast 110mph not even seeing them and they pulled him. Felt sorry for the guy.

Remember that is just a guideline you could get booked for .00000001mph over the limit.

Up to around 25mph ovet the limit you will usually get an offer of a fixed penalty of £60 and 3 points. They don't have to give you that. If they think you deserve it they could send you to court where the fines can be much higher (£1000?).

Anything that could lead to a ban will require a court appearance. That could be 10mph over the limit if you already have 9 points.

I wouldn't feel sorry for him. If he was driving at that speed and didn't notice a police car then he deserved all he got. What else didn't he notice?

No wind up. Straight up I admit I like to drive fast, on the motorway I like to cruise at 100mph and on the odd occasion speed it up a little. I know there is alot of people like me out there but doesn't seem to be many that will own up to.

I consider my self safe driver, i'v driven at over 100 mph+ ( abroard for the record) on lovely dry empty motorways. Been on a motorway in the thick fog doing 50 mph where in all honesty thats pushing it, and had most the motorway passing me with some doing arund 80mph which is just seriously dangerous.

The questions are serious, I just here alot of statements being thrown around about speeding and penalties. The favourite being caught over 100mph automatic ban.

Anyway would like to here from other people that aren't afraid to own up and stick their hand up and say they like to drive at 100mph+ on the motorway.( where permited e.g. German Autobahn :D ) Also goes with out saying where safe :)
