I pulled this from another forum I inhabit:

Do you want your mobile to be ex-directory?

You may already have heard about this, but early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access your number.
It’s easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to make sure that you are ex-directory.
You may want to suggest it to all your friends and family who have UK mobiles or they could be swamped by unsolicited messages and calls.
Removal is recommended by the BBC - see link below.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/w ... 091621.stm

To remove your number click on the link below, you need your mobile phone with you to do this as they text you a code

1 - http://www.118800.co.uk/

2 - Click on ‘Ex Directory’ at top right hand side of page, from there it’s straight forward.

You might need to wait until it's back up and running:

Oops, i just told a company that makes money by providing personal details by, er, giving them my personal details.

Hopefully they will go out of business very soon.

That was my thought. Like those unsubscribe links on spam emails. By unsubscribing you are confirming your mobile number is in use.

My mobile number is already registered with the TPS (for what good they do), but I generally don't answer calls if the number isn't in my phonebook anyway.

It's not on a directory as such as it seems when someone wants to contact you, you are contacted with their details via text so you can ignore them. At least this is what the 118 site seems to say when you try and opt out. I was going to opt out but obviously that meant giving them my personal details so I thought I'd rather just quietly ignore them. I think my mobile is registered with the tps anyway.

I like being cold called. It gives me an opportunity to be rude and offensive to the caller

TPS doesn't cover this, I spoke to them today regarding this service.

Effectively it's like the old BT directories, your data is with them and unless you specifically contact them to ask them to take it off they can use it.

The way the service has been set up has been a clever work around of current data protection legislation, however, once you have contacted them to say specifically that you do not want your data to be used then they have to abide by it or face legal penalties.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/13/118800_failure_encore/

And since the government itself, and its many departments, is the one that breaches the data protection act many thousands of times each day.........

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1199258/Litter-pests-Town-halls-snoop-800-000-drivers.html

But then, it is the mail....

Let's see: 46 out of 50 gov databases breach dpa......information is routinely, and illegally, shared between gov departments....all information held on you by the home office (et ips) is given to the us state department....

BT has just decided that it isn't going to allow phorm to use it for "online spying" for targeted advertising....but only because of the row when found out.....

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/03/17/bt_phorm_lies/

Yes, the data protection act is really good at................................what exactly ?

When my youngest son learned to talk, it was highly entertaining to give him the telephone and suggest he told the nice man/woman where he went for his holidays or what he had done at school.

He has aspergers syndrome, and can rabbit on for ages in such a charming manner they felt guilty about hanging up!
Sadly we don't get the opportunity nowadays as we get so few calls! :)

At work, I turn the tables and ask them before I answer ANY more questions if they would like to have some engraving done!

The junk faxes dried up after I sent them all an invoice for £7 to cover used fax paper and administration!
