Driver brings Bolton town centre to a standstill
8:58am Tuesday 18th August 2009

A motorist sparked lunchtime chaos when he parked in a busy town centre street — blocking a major bus route.

At the height of the confusion, 13 buses and more than 100 passengers were stuck in a queue from Bridge Street, along Deansgate, and on to Bradshawgate.

Police arrived as a crowd formed near the abandoned pick-up truck.

A tow truck was called to remove it, but the owner arrived — an hour after parking — with just minutes to spare.

The man, who told police he was called John Collins, was landed with a £150 pick-up truck fee, a £30 fine and was given a stern talking to by officers.

PC Rob Bolton said: “This caused mayhem in Bolton town centre and it was all down to one car.

“He could have paid £2 for an hour in one of Bolton’s many car parks like other drivers. He didn’t consider others at all when he parked there and I think he has got what he deserved.”

The drama unfolded at just after 1pm yesterday.

A double-decker bus came to a halt behind the parked up car, a Toyota Hilux pick-up truck, because the driver could not manoeuvre past it.

A traffic jam of different style buses from a variety of companies soon formed.

Police arrived and established who the owner of the vehicle was. It was originally the plan to smash one of the vehicle’s windows and move it down the street, but that could not be done as no lives were in danger.

David Anton, who was driving a double-decker 126 Stagecoach bus to Preston, was at the front of the queue.

He said: “I saw the bus in front of me mount the kerb to get past the parked car, but I couldn’t do that because of the trees.

“I read a few chapters of a book while waiting and the customers were frustrated but there is nothing we can do until the car is moved.”

Michelle Mooney, aged 22, of Mornington Road, Heaton, was on a bus with her baby son Brandon but decided to get off after half-an-hour of waiting.

She said: “Brandon was starting to get upset so I decided that it would be better to get off and have some fresh air and walk home.”

Another customer added: “This is ridiculous, I can’t believe one parked car can cause so much chaos.

“What would happen if someone had a heart attack on the bus? There is no way an ambulance could get through.”

When the pick-up driver, Mr Collins, returned, a police officer took his keys and moved it out of the way.

Mr Collins, a traveller who is staying at a camp site in Hulton Lane, failed to accept that he had done anything wrong.

He said: “The police should be out catching child molesters and terrorists killing innocent children.

“I have parked on the street and paid a fine. It’s not like I am selling drugs to children and ruining people’s lives.”

Simply beyond belief! :banghead: Selfish twazak! :banghead:

Just a traveller, eh.

Next time Al Queda will know how to disrupt life in the UK.

No need for bombs. Just park up a van.

I'm confused. Anyone got any better pictures of the area?

The photo makes it look like the street is at least 2 cars wide and there is no double yellow line or other obvious parking restriction, so technically the only thing he's done wrong (based on that photo) is mounting the curb to park.

It also looks like the bus could have gotten past just fine had the trees not been overhanging the road and/or the driver not wanting to scratch the paintwork on the top of the bus. Back when I was a kid the drivers would just drive straight through overhanging trees like that causing all the new first years at the front of the bus to dive for the floor.

Without knowing the area it's impossible to say for certain, but this story could easilly be "Jobsworth bus driver gridlocks town centre to avoid scratching his paintwork on some trees that have been allowed to overgrow"

Maybe if the council didn't charge he would have parked there instead?

I hear from our "sources" in that area that parking charges are an issue as they are higher than neighbouring Bury und Manchester

We do not have a photo yet .. we will ask our sources if they will oblige. We also know though that this road was "re-engineered" with wide pavements.. so the road ist narrow und at the time of this incident - umpteen shoppers would have been on the pavement - which would mean that driver could not have mounted the kerb to pass (even though illegal) . Plus .from the article it say a "crowd develop" which also not help perhaps :scratchchin:

All the same - there ist obligation not to park up to hinder others. By the way - I also read the bottom bit of the mail from our source on this parking issue .. the man could have parked at one of the two large supermarket carparks. One makes you purchase a small item from the store und the other one will allow a one hour stay only for no fee whatsoever. You can perhaps guess which one does the most trade :hehe: .. the one with the "shopping sprint to centre - 2 mins only"

Guy ist still a selfish twazak though

I must say bus drivers seem to be rubbish at getting through narrow gaps compared to HGV drivers. I had a bus driver stop next to my (badly parked) van when we were unloading. After ignoring him for a moment he got out and said "you'll have to move mate, I can't get through".

I pointed out that an artic had just got by, at which point he shut his window and just started tooting his horn at me. I did move, while laughing at him.

I am surprised that the police do not have the authority to take what action is needed to clear an obstruction. In my ideal world, the one where I am dictator, illegally parked vehicles would be out-with the law..

But buses are not articulated so need more space to turn.

It was a straight road, and I reckon he could've got through, if it wasn't for the extra-wide 'public sector sense of entitlement halo' around his bus.

I've asked Jazz & co to get us some real photos to clarify. She uses Canon compact and SLR digitals. My sisters noth think they take "naff photos" .. but I think they have a natural "eye".. and whilst I think they have to work on "road photos" . (new genre to then perhaps ) . they do some impressive rurals/portraits/iconic NT/EH mementoes. I have requested .. they say they will try when shopping in town.. next.

Cound it be a "restricted zone"? That's like a "controlled parking zone" but without the requirement for double yellow lines, so noone knows what's going on. The pair of signs (yes, the only signs you'll see) could also be at a junction so you don't notice them, or if you do you don't have time to read them.
This is a problem in poole.

hmm, by the look of the guy he was possibly out tarmacing someone's drive. I would have been inclined to check all his documents, all the gear in the back of it and dip his tank for red diesel.
