CRASH: FACTS
2,538 people died and nearly 250,000 were injured on roads in Great Britain in 2008
Road crashes are the largest single cause of death for people between ages 5 and 35
Travelling by road far deadlier than going by train, plane or boat
But 1,000 fewer deaths per year than in 1999 due to a range of factors

New drivers aged between 17 and 25 stand out. Passing a driving test does not provide the necessary experience and judgments needed for today's busy roads. The hourly distribution has high numbers between 10pm and 2am, implying partying, drinking and lower levels of seat belt use.
Those aged 75 years and older comprise a surprisingly large segment - likely reflecting the greater vulnerability of the human frame as we age. The hourly distribution of the 75+ group is almost the opposite of the 17? to 25-year-old group - almost all in daylight hours.

In 2008, 2,538 people died on Britain's roads, on average nearly seven every day. Using official data released by the Department of Transport, this map plots the location of every fatal road crash in Great Britain between 1999 and 2008, a total of 32,298 deaths.
Select a police authority or type in a postcode to discover where fatal road crashes occur. Click the yellow markers to get more detail. For 2008 we have included some links to stories – both BBC news and others – to convey some of the grim reality behind the statistics.

If you take out the old people and the young people and leave the bulk in the middle, how many are left? How many miles to the vast majority that are 25-65 drive per year and what is their probability of demise in an accident compared to the youngsters and the oldies? Are their accident rates per mile significantly different?
