I thought this was rather amusing

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Here's the factual one: Daily Mail

How do people feel about this? Call me cynical, but I just can't get worked up about it - it just seems to me to be yet another case of HMG crying 'Wolf!'

Even at its worst the danger of being hurt in a terrorist attack is so much lower than the other threats to my life that I find it difficult to get worried. For most of my adult life this country was threatened by much more effective terrorists - the IRA - than the current ones. We survived that threat without sacrificing civil liberties (at least on this island).

Not that an election will make any difference.
Same litany: Different people.

In the preface of a 1947 Ukrainian edition of Animal Farm he explained how escaping the communist purges in Spain taught him: "how easily totalitarian propaganda can control the opinion of enlightened people in democratic countries."

So can we exchange terrorism and global warming ?

I like this

My bullshit dector is flashing

Quote:
Intelligence sources said the decision followed a 'non-specific' warning from the CIA that the UK is facing an increased threat from Al Qaeda.

Quote:
'This means that a terrorist attack is highly likely, but I should stress that there is no intelligence to suggest that an attack is imminent.

Are we, at this point supposed to cry to the goverment for help. "Put a cammrea in my house I may be a terrosit! I don't think I but the the precautionary principle says I must, help me gordon see me though this!!!"

If the title of this thread is correct then this seems daft. Everywhere in the world is now more at risk?

I imagine the Americans have just found out where the Yemen is located.

I thought the biggest threat to us all is speed?

I know  Why don't they put posted signs up with "Terrorists' kill" written inside a big red triangle or a circlular one just saying "Terrorists" with a red line through it? :bighand:

Why doesn't the Home Secretary come on TV to tell us about the big speed killer? Surely the level is worse than 'Severe'? :?

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

If all terrorists drove above the speed limit on their way to their attacks they would have been disqualified and immobile by now.
Of course, that would have put onto the buses and trains....hmmmm.
Anyway, I await the [imminent] arrival of terrorist detector vans.
They will doubtless be situated just after a blind bend. Instead of getting sent a NIP you will be shot if you brake suddenly upon sighting the van.

We survived the IRA bombing the sh*t out of us for what, 25 years or more? They (the IRA) were probably better funded, by the Americans, armed and organised than Al Quaeda.

Wake me up when we have a sensible government.

I won't hold my breath and I'm guessing you won't either, along with millions of other 'British' - whatever that means anymore to us, or most of all to the brave who fought and died for this dirt!

UK = Useless Kingdom. If someone can tell me what power or respect the UK has anymore on the European or global stage, I'm all ears.

This Government makes me puke! It has sold the family silver and prostituted its children. Guy Fawkes had the right idea but he needn't have tried; Britain broke itself some 400 years later...

Well you could always move to Haiti or Rwanda or Somalia or even China if you don't like the way things are here. (That is a sarcastic way of saying "count your blessings", be happy that you live in the 16th richest country in the world)

I heard on the TV this morning that we, and I quote, "are the fifth richest country in the world". :? I'd like to know who the bloody hell has got it because it sure aint anyone I know.

Oh I do, believe me, and you have quoted what my mum taught me all her life. But that's not to say we shouldn't be making things better in a so-called civilised country.

I've said it before but if you are going to go around invading other counrys' and poking your nose into their affairs telling them how great and good a democracy is, then we should be getting it a lot better than we damn well are! (And by "we" I mean UK and Amerika!) If anything, we are an advert for what doesn't work, but I guess it's how you define 'success'. (Now that could be a thread on its own).

This country entered an illegal war and no-one is going to be held to account! I don't so much count my blessings as count the thousands of innocent men, women and children who have been murdered by 'my' country! And the stupid thing is our dear Gov cries Terrorism! Well WTF would YOU do if the roles were reversed!!! They view us as terrorists, and with perfect justification.

You're going to verbally box my ears now aren't you? I can feel it in my water :D

But how can you be sure that the driver won't hide an IED amongst the Eccles cakes?

Not at all I completely agree with every thin that you say about illegal wars. But I do have a certain sympathy with the government about terrorism. They are damned if they do something and would be even more damned if they did nothing and London was destroyed. But earlier governments managed the IRA threat in a more sensible manner and eventually neutralised it not by fighting but by addressing legitimated grievances.

There was a very interesting interview with a former ambassador from China on the radio this morning. She was very forceful about the folly of trying to push western democracy onto developing nations. She pointed out that China was at a stage of development corresponding to Britain in the 18th century and pointed out that our human rights and democracy back then were not much to boast about.
