RICHMOND — The 70 mph speed limit for selected highways cruised through another legislative committee Thursday.

A House of Delegates committee approved a bill (SB 537) sponsored by Sen. Steve Newman, R-Lynchburg, that would allow 70-mph zones on certain interstates and other limited-access roads if traffic-engineering studies show it is a safe speed.

The vote in the House Transportation Committee was 15-5, with all the ‘no’ votes coming from Democrats. The 70 mph speed limit was one of Gov. Bob McDonnell’s campaign promises.

An identical House version of the bill (HB 856) was approved Tuesday in the Senate on a 30-10 vote; all 10 ‘no’ votes were cast by Democrats.


Rather interesting to obtain their traffic engineering studies ...

This is specifically in the state of Virginia, where they still have a 65 mph Interstate speed limit.

The maximum speed limits in each state can be seen here:

It seems that the higher the altitude, the higher the limit :wink:

Seems the converse is true in the UK- or so it seems - we have one poster who claims to livein a a hut covered with mildue who sinks to extreme limits to tells us ( from the ocean depths ) that speed is evil . :o :o ( oh ,on another forum he has some strange footwear ) :D :D :D

Some one toss him a depth charge ,please .

That map is very interesting - I hadn't realised how varied it was.
I wonder how their data stacks up against ours all considering and prior to cameras.
