Bike-catching new speed cameras still don’t work

Speed camera bosses are no closer to fixing a cock-up which has rendered an £800,000 high-tech new camera network unusable.

Rear-facing average-speed cameras on Cheshire’s A537 Cat and Fiddle road from Macclesfield to Buxton were supposed to be switched on by Easter to catch motorcyclists.
But the Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership is still at a loss over what to do about an apparent oversight which makes them inaccurate.
The devices calculate average-speed between camera units based on the assumption that vehicles haven’t strayed from the A537. But between two of them there is a shortcut which leaves and rejoins the A537, cutting the journey and making an accurate speed calculation impossible.
When MCN exposed the cock-up last month, partnership manager Lee Murphy said he hoped to resolve the problem and begin enforcement within a week.
But Murphy said today the partnership had yet to find a solution. “I can’t say anything more than that,” he added.
I wonder what insight this may give us as to the limitations of their program capabilities ! It seems curious that they are unable to resolve this mathematical issue ? If it isn't that what might it be? I would have no interest in telling them anyway, once I have a potential solution. :)

i remember a few years back a certain MCN reporter highlighted a story on Derbyshires unmarked blue traf pol camera van.
i also remember a few years back a certain MCN getting caught by derbyshires blue unmarked traf pol camera van and getting disqualified as a result

with regards to the link road the cannot just amend a limit,

in reality only the die hard locals know the system is inactive, any recreational visitor will see the yellow poles, and think ASC better behave

Not true. Derbyshire roads like the Cat and Fiddle, Long Hill, Highwayman triangle are well known throughout the motorcycling fraternity. I am sure that the state of the system is common knowledge amongst MCN readers.

true they are, all you need is a few cars vans, hgv's slowing the traffic to fetch the mean speed down

I remember this!
We discussed this offline a month or two ago Claire. If you remember, a vehicle could cut through a side road, saving something like ~0.3 miles off the journey, and the limit through that short cut was higher (NSL).
The short cut was something like this (Google maps).

That is correct Steve. I know that road well. Whilst the alternative it is NSL it isn't really safe to drive at 60 mph because of the usual rural impedimenta - tractors, hikers and so on. It would be deplorable in road safety terms if the cameras encouraged bikers to use that route.

But t should be eassy to have a camera between points A and B on your map to tell which route was being used.

Requiring the use of "the little grey matter " ( as one Belgian detective would say) - something our friends in SCP aren't exactly noted for the use of .

Cheers for the confirmation!

If the OCR (optical character recognition) wasn't entirely reliable (and we already know it isn't) for the system placed through the short cut - aren't we back at square 1? You might as well have a parallel SPECS setup through there!
Saying that, I don't know exactly where the current cameras are anyway.

There's a map of the camera locations here.

The section that can be bypassed is between 1 and 2 on the map (although actually I think 1 is actually a bit further east). This section is about 3 miles long and much of it is extremely twisty, so you would have to do some heroic driving to trigger the cameras in a car.
