I know someone who is a PCV driver and he has had a ticket saying he was doing 70 mph in a 50 zone. Trouble is, the bus is speed limited to 55!!!! It seems the camera concerned is a dual speed camera/red light camera called a Redspeed. Anyone got any suggestions how this so called accurate camera technology could have made such a glaring error??

We could get some vital clues if a scan of the offending evidence was shown (with any particulars edited out of course). Are you able to get access to the evidence?

You have a PM.

You obviously don't know that this technology is infallible. The bus WAS doing 70mph. The driver is a child murdering maniac.

Yuo're no doubt being sarcastic, so I will add some further details. The camera is on the A580 East Lancs Road,at Swinton, at the junction with Moorside Rd. Those who use this Road will know the camera concerned. The bus was a Volvo B9, the latest model, and cannot exceed 55 mph. We are investigating, and I think the most likely cause is the camera being uncalibrated. Even so, the Secondary Check photos should have revealed the Primary Reading to be false. It would seem GMP have failed to follow proper procedures in scrutinising the photos. I understand the Redspeed takes 2 photos. I cannot imagine how this reading could have been generated in any other way. Even so, enquiries are being made to get the photos, and then we shall see what we shall see!
In the interim, if anyone else can throw some light on this, would be grateful.

As a starter - have a look for info on the high speed bus incident ( few years ago though) ,where it was found that a rear panel on the bus vibrated in such a way that it gave off radar reflections making the Gatso think the bus was at very high speed ( ANY ONE ELSE REMEMBER THIS TALE ??) .Several others ,like an Allegro clocked at 400 mph - in all cases it looked like secondary checks were not made .

Secondary checks are extra effort and expense, which will affect the SCP's bottom line, so need only be carried out in the event that someone has the audacity to challenge the infallible machine. :loco:

Don't think Redspeed uses radar. However it is a requirement that Poloice scrutinize secondary check photos. If they haven't this is scandalous. How many other inocents are being done in this way, who cannot prove their vehicle cannot exceed a certain limit? Diabolical. Anyway, will keep you abreast of any developments.

Thinking about the incident I posted last - think one factor in getting the SCP to see sense was the tacho evidence .

There have been a few, buses, large panel vans, cars towing caravans.

A check of the photos should be enough to prove the correct speed.

I can now report that the police have dropped the speeding allegation, but no photos were sent and no explanation offered as to how the speed was calculated. Incidentally, this camera is a dual speed/red light camera. If the camera is uncalibrated, would that not make red light allegations invalid too?
