Pledging to keep speed cameras

Cuts in road safety funding will not lead to any speed cameras being switched off in Leicestershire, it has emerged.

The Leicestershire Safety Camera Partnership said it would not turn off or remove any of its fixed-camera sites around the county or cut back its mobile operation.
The partnership issued the statement after it was revealed that the Government had slashed the money given to local authorities for road safety.
However, the partnership added that the cuts meant no new cameras would be installed.

Hema Lad, from the Leicestershire Safety Camera Partnership, said: "There are no plans to reduce the number of safety cameras which are run by the local road safety partnership, made up of the county and city councils, police and other groups.

"Evidence from accident statistics shows that the cameras have been effective in reducing casualties and to remove them would be a retrograde step."

The government has cut £38 million of the £95 million that had been due to go to local authorities for road safety.
As I feared some areas will retain cameras and some not creating a variable 'paranoia' in road users.

Oops, there goes those suffering the obvious conflict of interest yet again capitalising on the illusion of regression to the mean.
I challenge them (or anyone) to prove cameras are at all effective when accounting for that factor, 'long-term trends' and 'bias on selection' (additional unrelated safety measures that (also) reduce casualties within the confines of camera sites).

How will they continue if their funding is cut? Will their employees work for free, in the altruistic belief that their actions are saving lives?

I'm going to bear in mind who's keeping the scams when planning my next UK holiday I think.

Yes, at great personal inconvenience, I'll be boycotting Leicestershire next year ;)

Devon and Cornwall might get a boost, though :)

Maybe not such a bad thing when we compare what happens there and Oxfordshire a year from now. They may be reading and weeping at the stats which they can then stuff in their pipes and smoke. :D

Me too. Think I'll be heading south, somewhere at the end of the A44 :D

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

I'd have put as the plural of the Turkish Delight bar slogan
