So causing death by dangerous driving would largely go unpunished since few drivers set out with the intention of killing anyone?

No, dangerous driving does carry intent within it. It's causing death by careless driving which is the odd man out. No intent and yet you can be jailed.

It can't be right that a young mother can be jailed for a moment's inattention when her child cries out in the back of the car and she is distracted just when another kid steps into the road in front.

(Did you like my BRAKE style juxtaposition of mothers, children etc. to aid my point.)

In my view, dangerous driving should be punished on the same basis as death by dangerous driving. The offence is the same, only the outcome is different.

I find that profound and very thought provoking JtB; I hadn’t thought about it that way before thanks.

I think my only reservation is that dangerous driving isn’t what is in the head of the dangerous driver who doesn’t think he is being dangerous. It's more of a 'tag' which the law attributes in some arbitrary way IMHO..

When I was young I often rode like an idiot! I was also quite good at what I did but that is absolutely no excuse for treating public roads like a race track.

The person I am today is the very same person I would ‘soccer punch’ for the kind of stupid, irresponsible and dangerous behaviour I am ashamed to say I participated in all those years ago.

I don’t have a solution, unless you raise the age of driving to 50 which I believe is a responsible age and about the lowest insurance category/age where you still have all, or most, of your faculties intact together with wisdom...

I’m 52 :D My waist is about 36 these days :(

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.
